So I understand I need a iPad. Would a nice refurbished series one iPad from the apple shop be ok ?
What's the minimum size iPad would I need to run maps like the VMS app ?
Also, I gather I need a 3G enabled iPad to run a map app ?
Cheers,
Matt, some places like WOW r selling the runout models pretty cheap, plus the VMS at 149 dollars still cheaper than the VMS 500 or Hema. I am this close to getting the mapping as I have the Pad already. Just wouldn't mind some feedback from someone that has done it.

The refurbished pads are $538 on the apple site. That is with a 12 month factory warranty, my brother bought a refurbished laptop from them and is really happy with it. I will have to ferret some money away......

I am 99% sure u can as the itunes will sync with the device but would like someone to confirm for sure. I have brought everything directly to the ipad on the ipad. I must sync with computer so i don't lose eveything if something happens.

Yes u need a iPad, does not matter which one it does not need 3G as it does not need the sim as the iPad has a gps inbuilt, I only have the 16 gb one and believe it is enough
Just reading the VMS site and it was saying that u needed a 3G version???. 3g is the wnay to go anyhow i tink as you can not always get wifi to use your pad.

First post here! You do need a 3G iPad. The Wi Fi iPads do not have a GPS in them.
I have downloaded the VMS app and it works fine. You may have to scan some of your own maps if you want more details of the High Country although the map supplied has enough detail.
You can get the app for less than $120 if you are smart! BigW online, currently have iTunes gift cards for 2 x $20 cards for $30 with free delivery. Buy 8 x $20 gift cards and these will cost $120 with $160 value.

Well i brought the itopo maps through mud map for $49.99, now it has taken almost 3 hours to download 1 of the 8 maps, 7 more to go. don't know if i am doing something wrong or it is just a big download for the ipad to handle.

If it is 8 maps then I'm assuming it is 8 vertcile strip maps. I've got them with my Hema 2008 set and they are only about 150mb on average each. That is in the OZFX3 format. Would assume the newer ones might be bigger but to take 3 hours for one map it must be pretty big. I downloaded a couple of video games trailers earlier today and dragged down about 500mb in about 30 minutes and I think I've got a pretty slow connection for ADSL2+.
