    Re: 1st GPS guidance needed

You shouldn't need to do any trimming as that is the narrower model suitable for older model Toyotas. It is also supplied with a wiring harness for plug and play installation according to the blurb in the ebay ad
IMPORTANT. At checkout please advise your car make, model, variant and year of build and we will include the appropriate plug and play wire harness. This will mean an easy install and you won't need to cut your existing cables which may void any new car warranty.

      Fido,

I would stay as far away as humanly possible from those cheap chinese in-dash systems. Speaking from experience, I bought one for my old S pack Holden Commodore (when I owned one a couple of years ago) and they are absolute rubish.

The graphics of it appear to have been made by a 5 year old and the functionality is pretty average. When you're talking on bluetooth the sat nav will cut you off to tell you turn left and then revert back to your conversation (unbelievable)!

At the end of the day, you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!

If you're going to go for an in-dash system, save your pennies and go for the big brand names (pioneer, kenwood etc.) if not go for the portable ones.

I personally have a TomTom XL540 (my 2nd TomTom) and personally love it. There is a way to install different maps on it, but you need to be very good with computers and do some 'hacking' of the TomTom system I believe. I've never attempted it, but at one stage did make my own list of speed cameras as the TomTom version didn't have them all.

      Hope that helps a little.

Whilst I am good with computers (I build my own) I would have no idea how to hack the TomTom. My understanding is the TomTom doesn't run WinCE and you need this OS in order to load custom maps.

That is not completely true but if you are wanting to run OziExplorer then you will probably want a GPS unit that supports Windows CE. Des has released a Beta version for use with Android but I believe it is very limited and stops functioning after a particular date.

There is a Tomtom Navcore designed for devices running WinCE. But you can't buy a native Tomtom device and expect it to run Ozi.

I had a Garmin, brilliant untill it was superseded, bought a Tom Tom , never again. If you have a street address it will not give choice of suburb, you may be a steet away but unless you have the correct suburb it will not function?????? You get what you pay for.

Not sure if this will relate to your problem, Brenton, but in Tomtom, if you know the street but not the suburb, you can enter the suburb as the capital city of the state you are in, eg, Adelaide in SA. Then choose the street.

                  Fido,

with the TomTom, when it's plugged into your computer it appears as an external drive. The maps TomTom uses are OSM format. When I say you need to be good at hacking, I mean you would need to turn your OziExplorer maps into OSM format and then upload them to your tomtom, making it think they were the standard australia maps.

I did play with it a while ago but have since lost interest in trying to defy computer programmers as I seldom won

The unit I am selling on Ebay is outstanding value for money. Remember that Navman, Garmin etc are all just cheap chinese GPSs in disguise, despite what they might tell you. If you try to crack maps etc for them then you also risk 'bricking' the unit (i.e., it will never work again).

The system I am selling offers street navigation and Ozi from the same unit. You simply change the file path for the nav software in settings. It takes about 10 seconds to do this. The touch-screen is super responsive and I am very impressed by the cold start up time. For those (like me) who are happy with the original toyota CD player, and don't want to spend 600+ on an in-car system, these unit are an excellent 'toy'. The dollar savings compared to Hema units etc are massive and it's money better spent elsewhere (like going towards a winch or something).

I can do a discount for PP members. There isn't a lot of room to move in price, but I can do delivered for PP members for only $160. This is 20 odd cheaper than on Ebay, and you get the benefit of permanent email support from me (did I say benefit? :-) )

FIDO - as per your question the other day, the unit does run WinCE 5.0 I do not see this as being a problem whatsoever. The unit can also run a reverse camera through the AV input, and I am currently working on a bluetooth version which would allow for hands-free mobile etc.

If any one is interested they can PM me.

                    Ian.

I have installed that unit in a 90 series prado (2001 GXL) and while it is the narrower unit there is still some trimming to the fascia to fit it properly and I had to modify the original brackets for the stereo to fit the unit. Nothing that a stanley knife couldnt fix for the fascia and a file for the brackets. The wiring harness is all plug and play. I earthed the handbrake wire too (youre supposed to wire it to the handbrake so you can only see videos/tv when stopped but just joined it to the earth on the wiring harness and soldered/heatshrink). If you're not fussed about a reverse camera the install is very straight forward. The camera takes the most time from my experience. There are a few threads on here on how to do it if you need pictures or to ask for some help.

The kids love it cos of the ipod connectivity, can play DVDs and avi's and the bluetooth is a godsend for getting hold of the missus while she is driving oh and the kids love watching the reverse camera!

I'm assuming you can do this from the same SD card provided it has enough capacity? What size card would you need to run both?

Thanks for the confirmation. How far away is the bluetooth version? I didn't realise the other unit was lacking this.

Yes. Both run from the same SD card. IGO is a surprisingly small application so you can fit this and a lot of Ozi maps as well as the Ozi program on a 2gb SD card. You could go up to 4gb. If you were going round Australia you would probably want 2 cards anyway, even if 1 was just a back up. With Ozi, You generally plan your trip and load the maps you will likely need. No point loading 100s of maps that you will never access.

The Bluetooth version can be done now. It is $30 extra.

                          Cheers
