  • Mounting GPS external aerial on Snorkel

    Hello all,

I have a TJM snorkel fitted to my Prado and I am looking at mounting a GPS aerial on top of it. My question is - how hard will it be to run the cable down the inside of the snorkel and out in to the engine bay? Is it a major job? I don't like the idea of the cable being cable tied to the outside of the snorkel then passing it through the door at some point.

Any ideas/solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I've had my GPS ariel running through the door atleast 12 months and there is no sign of damage. I think the cable is so small it shouldnt wory, it has become moulded to the shape of the door and dosnt move at all.

I ran the wire down the back of the snorkel and through the pipe clamp that holds the snorkel head on, the wire fits between the expansion split in the snorkel head, and I wraped a bit of electrical tape around the wire to make it a tighter fit and stop chafing.

I had a post on here somewhere, relating to how to get cables past the door seals.

Basically, pull the door seal away from the lip on the bodywork, use a round file to make a section the same size as the cable in the lip, deburr and paint the filing work, place the cable in the cut out, use some electrical tape around the cable if you think it's going to get damaged, push the seal back and you're done.

This was shown to me by a professional installer who works on Police, Ambulance and other cars with gear on the roof.
