  • Mud Map / VMS

    Just got this:
To all the iPad users, we apologize for MUD MAP not been a universal app. We would like to share our road map and plans of where we are headed to help you make more informative decision when purchasing.

We are focusing the MUD MAP brand towards Outdoor Recreational Activities EXCLUDING 4WD. This is clear in all the info we have published on the App Store & our website. This is one of the reasons why V3 is an iPhone app. The other reason is that there is a lot of work we need to do so it can be a universal app and since the iPad as a navigation tool is only useful for vehicle orientated activities, therefor we made the decision to release MUD MAP as an iPhone app.

For the 4WDers out there, VMS will be represented in this space. As updates appear, you can expect features relevant to 4WDing to become available in the VMS app. If you have suggestions on how to improve the app thats related to 4WDing, it most likely will in included in the VMS app.

This approach will allow us to better tailor features of each app to suit the activities they are intended for.

Now, we are working on an update of the VMS app. It will include all the features on MUD MAP v3. Like the previous versions, the VMS will be bundled with iTOPO & Gregory's maps as well and will retail for $199. Any customers who already own the VMS app will receive a free update to VMS v3. Oh, and the VMS app will be universal on both iPhone & iPad. Our goal is to have VMS V3 out within 1 month.

For customers who intend to use our products for 4WDing, please, please follow our advise and get the VMS app. For those who have purchased MUD MAP v3 but feel that you should of got the VMS app instead, we would like to extend a offer to migrate to VMS free of charge. What you need to do is purchase the VMS app, send us the invoice from iTunes that clearly indicate the purchase of both MUD MAP v3 & VMS app. We will also require your paypal email address. Once we verify all this info, we'll pay $59.99 to your nominated PayPal account. This offer is valid until the end of August. Alternatively, you can get in touch with Apple and request a refund on the purchase of MUD MAP v3, then buy the VMS app.

If you have purchase any of the iTOPO or Gregory’s maps from mud-maps.com and would also like to upgrade to VMS, email us the iTunes invoice for the VMS app & the invoice for the maps you purchased & your nominated PayPal account, we’ll credit your map purchases.

Please note, if you purchase the VMS app right now, it is V2. But when we update it to V3, you'll get the upgrade free of charge.

We hope that this post has reduced confusion and also demonstrate that we really care about our customer's and satisfaction with our product. From all of us at MUD MAP, thank you so much for your support. We couldn't of reached #1 navigation app in the App Store without your help. We promise to make our apps the best they can possibly be and we hope this care comes across when you use our apps. Thank you all for your support.

So if you pay the $199 do you get true topographic contour maps and if so down to what scale ?
Sister-inlaw has an iPad and is keep to go bush like we are. She is looking at getting this if it will do on and off road.
I have been using the Rooftop's maps, is it as good as those ?

Honestly, I have no idea. I use mud maps on the iPhone and there are some good ones, the feature is that they use the inbuilt GPS and do not rely on the phone network. Suggest you log on to there site and download the mud map app, then make a guestimate as to the use of the vms system

I just got this app VMS and seems to be a real good and well thought out product and I think when they come out with v3 it will be better. The only thing I have a complaint about is the detail of maps in Sydney. I also downloaded memory map and it's maps seem to be of greater detail. Not sure if maps can be swapped or downloaded between different applications still working out the iPad

Slightly off topic as this related more to Memory-Map...........

Memory-map uses it's own format for the maps (*.qct and *.qc3 are two that come to mind), so I doubt you can share them with the mud-map formatted maps.
I've been using memory-map on my iPad, but instead of buying maps from memory-map, I converted most of my ozi-explorer formatted maps into memory-map format (there are some instructions on how to do this on a few GPS forum sites. A google search should find them). Once converted I loaded them onto my iPad using iTunes.

I went with memory-map instead of VMS/mud-maps due to the better features (mud-maps wouldn't work in landscape mode for example in v2.x; the only maps you can use are those provided by VMS/mud-maps; there is no PC version of the software for trip planning, editing waypoints, etc). The other main reason was that I could use my existing (converted from oziexplorer) maps rather than having to buy new ones, saving me quite a bit of money.

I must admit, that even if I had to buy new maps, I'd probably still go with memory-map (similar maps cost about the same as the VMS pack). Anyhow, just something to think about.

John I also tried memory-map and liked it the maps seem to have a bit more detail from what I tried. NSW Blue Mtns. Also like the track log seems to have a few good features. If I found this an hour before purchasing vms rather than an hour after I may not have purchased the vas until I really tried it out. Also didn't know you could load your own maps so thanks for the heads up.

Still think vas has a good product.

so now im really confused, i have the app on my iphone with the grass with a brown 'M', is this mud map or memory map? cost $2.99 and i bought a map (itopo zone 50 south, most of the south west) for about $10. so far it does everything i need it to do, by way of displaying me moving on a non-contoured topo map...for a total of $13 i have a app that shows unsealed roads and im guessing can be transferred to an ipad in the future when the time comes...thoughts??
I thought I would be differant and get a silver prado...

just realized my VMS iphone app had disappeared from my iphone (thanks miss 4 year old..). I am now aware that VMS is now MUD MAP and I can update it back into my ipad thru itunes. Its happening right now !

Got to love itunes sometimes.... but not all the time.
