Ok, after a 7 hour installation (there was a few smoke and beer breaks in that and we did two cars simultaneously!)
The Prado entertainment system has gone from this
to this....
it's about 80% complete... few issues.
1. toyota head unit face is wider than standard, while the unit itself fits perfectly, there are gaps of around a cm on either side (can see the bolts in the photo above, I’m off to supercheap/bunnings tomorrow to find some black plastic to fill them in.
2. Reverse camera wiring is in place (av wire) runs from front to back but camera not installed or plugged in, left that one for another day as we ran out of light.
all in all it’s bloody great!
has
* GPS using route 66 software (far better than my old navman)
* TV now tuned into local Brisbane stations (not that I can watch it when driving but would be handy when sitting around waiting for someone!
* DVD player
* CD player (single disk)
* Radio
* Bluetooth which I’ve sync'd to my phone and only had one test call. Microphone is a little far away but I’m sure that's nothing new! Brings up a number pad on the screen for dialling which is pretty handy!
* Reverse camera (or as the manual refers to it when in one of the wiring diagrams "back back sight view" (I love the translations) which is not yet wired.
so far there is only one casualty of the install which shouldn't be hard to fix and that's that all power windows except the drivers have stopped working from both the drivers console and also each of the doors... have to do a little investigating there but open to suggestions!!
Heaps of install pics to come in a separate writeup once i’ve finished it off and got some daytime photo’s of the completed setup!
edit: took the oportunity to replace the antenna also, bought a front mounted one (a-la uhf) and put it in in place of the rear window job.... reception greatly improved!!
Looks great so far.
With the windows, go to each window and wind them up and down fully at each window with it own control and it should go back to auto mode.
Mine did this after I had the computer reset.
Maybe yours is a similar problem..

Have a look at the Toyota Echo - they have little plastic in-fill panels (with rounded corners) on each side of its double-din unit that maybe just the go for yours as well.

Thanks Russ, that was the first thing i tought it was but alas, the windows don't even work from each of hte doors.
interestingly though, on the driver panel the only window button with the light illuminated is the drivers (e.g. the little led on each of the other window switches is off...

You can buy the appropriate surrounds from Strathfield Car Radios. Picture below shows the infills I used. Perfect fit!. Mine included the tray compartment as well and the cost was under $20.
I am very impressed with your set up. Might do something similar myself.
I have tried multiple times now to contact the maker of this unit via the website but so far I cannot get the email enquiry system to work.
Well I finally managed to get a hold of the sales manager for this unit which is called the Road Rover. She has given me a price of USD$650.00 per unit which includes the Australian map. She went on to say:
It is with 7''touch screen and intergrade Navigation,DVD,Bluetooth,Radio,MP3/MP4 and Games into one unit,as it is special for vehicle,so it can connect with the original plug and harness directly to be installed without modification.

Do you know if both of these are internally the same?
For the Prado....although there is no mention of Windows CE
& generic? Which does list Windows CE.
As far as I know it is all the same unit but they make shrouds to fit the different car makes. If you go to their website you will see that they have different part numbers for the same unit but with different facias to fit the different car makes.

McBain, is this unit Digital TV?
analogue unfortunately..so it has a limited shelf life should they phase it out.. but i beleive digital was an option through some of the suppliers..
i'm not that phased though, my experience with digital is that if the signal is weak, you can get thumping and screatching (i think that's the technical term) through the speakers as it goes in and out of signal. well that what i experienced with CH7 which dropped in and out during storms at home and nearly blowing the speakers, i didn't particularly want that happening in the car also..
