Steering wheel controls

Mav,

How is the unit going now that you have installed it? Is it what you expected? I am going to order my unit from Maria just after Christmas although I don't get my vehicle until March. I am stockpiling all of my goodies to install as soon as I get the car, (can't wait). Just to clarify do the steering wheel controls operate correctly with the unit? Are you going to connect a cd stacker also?

Yep I can confirm that the steering wheel buttons work correctly. I would like to get a DVD stacker but it needs to use the Sanyo protocol to work with the A2270. There are DVD stackers out there but there is little information as to what protocol standard they use.

I am having a problem with the Route66 software which I think will require a reload of the software only the original Route66 CD was not included so it will mean either getting a new SD card from Roadrover in China or buying a new Route66 package and having the CD to make more SD card copies from.

Dear MAV

Does the unit comes with an in-built GPS Antena , or it is an external antena.

My car diesn't have a GPS antena, am currently using one mobile GPS unit (Garmin) and it had it's own antena

Where dows this unit's antena gets fixed

Hi Mansour,

It comes with a wired external GPS antenna which I have placed on the top of the dash there is plenty of wire to run it through the underneath of the dash to the door frame pillar.

It gets satelite lock very quickly but I must say that after using the Route 66 software that I am not overly impressed with it. When using it the other day it tied to get me to turn onto the wrong side of a dual carriage way. I have never had this happen with TomTom software. It does have the latest NavTeq maps but I have found these inferior to the Sensis maps for Australia they may be better for your country.

I am still having some issues withthe Route 66 software that I am endeavouring to get fixed as I think the Route 66 software I have is corrupted as I am not able to do any destination searches by typing in a location, I currently have to designate my destination by using the map and zooming in on my destination. This is very time consuming to say the least. I am also not able to do any searches on POIs as it locks up the software. It would appear that the database is corrupt or missing for these functions.

My Nokia 6085 pairs up no problem with the A2270 and when making or receiving a call the other audio is blanked out.

I am not sure about the prospect of loading up another navigation software package. I only just found out yesterday that the Route 66 Navigate 7 package that is on it is a special version to use the hardware of the Roadrover unit. It is not a version you can buy off the shelf as that is what I was intending to do myself.

You would be better off asking that question direct to the Roadrover company.

I had an email from Maria yesterday and she told me she had been away on a business trip.

The Roadrover has some quirks but overall if I can get the Route 66 issues fixed I will be happy with it. They are sending me the software to reload the SD card for the Route 66 software and they are sending me the new map to put on it. They have also asked Route 66 R&D to have a look at the problems to see if they need to make another version to iron out the problems or if it is just a procedural problem.

I have often heard people say that the Navteq maps are better than the Sensis ones but having used Sensis for a few years with TomTom OS I can say that the Navteq maps are inferior to Sensis at the moment in regards to things like roundabouts and newer roads. The software does announce that you are going into a non fully coded area and you may not receive correct directional advice. I have a TomTom Go 500 that I have compared the Route 66 to and the TomTom so far comes out on top for included information. The other thing is that the Roadrover software does not have speed/red light camera info and although this info is available from Route 66 I have not as yet been able to incorporate the data into the program. I will endeavour to do this when I have successfully created a new SD card that works.

I am a total Noob when it comes to Ozi but from what Tim (Bitdist) tells me it works okay. Still have issues with Route 66 software at the moment, hopefully this will be taken care of shortly when I am able to make a new SD card copy.

I have a 2007 Sept build D4D VX. I really like the way that the roadrover fits into the dash now with the aid of the half panel that you put me on to.

I have a Nov built GXL and also like the way it fits in the dash
It will fit any one with climate control (and you obviously have to buy the new bit of the dash from Toyota - about $80)

Ozi works fine - just like on a PDA with a large screen !!

A couple of anoying things for me (apart from route 66 not working properly so far)
1. Don't bother buying the TV unit they supply. It plugs in to the same spot as the steering wheele control. If you want TV just get a tv box with AV out
2. You can't play any disks at the same time as the navigation. (You can play them to an external thing like a DVD player in the back) So if you want to listen to a CD at the same time as navigation - forget it.
Radio works fine at the same time, and I suspect mp3 off the usb port will work fine as well, but have not tried it yet
3. There is a spot near home that route 66 gets itself completely tied up. Basically it locks up every time I drive through this spot :cry:
4. Bit hard getting the SD card in and out (but thats pretty minor)

Apart from that it all seems to work fine
You can load up all your contacts for the phone which is good
Sound out of it is probably pretty similar to the standard unit
steering wheel controls all work OK
Having OZI on it, for me is a ++ (I like my 4wd maps)

Well I had a real good test run today going from Corlette in Port Stephens to Windsor and back. I will say straight up that the Roadrover failed pretty much all my testing.

Tried to run Route 66 and play MP3s from a USB hard drive, documentation says it can do this but it failed miserably. Give it ten minutes or so and the system will hang.

Tried then to run DVD and Satnav concurrently and again the system hung after a short period.

The system is unable to maintain stable time and for unkown reasons will jump anywhere from an hour to 12 hours in advance when switching between functions. This becomes annoying as it affects the Route 66 calculations of arrival times etc.

Audio quality of the radio on FM is severely affected by the Route 66 software running at the same time.

I think if you just wanted to use one function at a time the unit would work fine but the point is that if you have these kinds of units you normally want to have at least two functions going at once, ie Satnav and either DVD, Radio, or MP3 player. Unfortunately as it stands the Roadrover is not capable of performing these functions with any reliability.

When you have set a route using Route 66 and stop at a servo etc, once you switch off the engine and the unit loses power then there is no memory of the route that was planned and so when you start up again you have to re-enter your route. This is majorly annoying for me.

Another annoyance is that there is no way to dimm the display at night, you can turn the display off entirely or leave it on but nothing inbetween.

I haven't had any of those issues with the one i put in. although i share a couple of your annoyances...

the unit forgetting the route when you turn the car off is annoying but can re-program using the navigate to recent destination really easily!

can do many things at same time. i often have GPS running while audio is playing, although would prefer to see GPS with radio in the backround than what it currently does which is show radio and run GPS in the backround (though it flashes the GPS on the screen when directions are given.) have found that bluetooth interrupts it all which is great. though if you're on the phone you don't get directions which has caught me out more than once when I've had phone calls come in when critical directions were required!

also can't dim it... or turn the screen off... but i'm used to it now..

I think the unit is running short on memory which is causing the lock ups. It could be that our crap copy of Route 66 is just a memory hog which would not surprise me. I am hoping that the new load of Route 66 will alter the way the unit is functioning at the moment otherwise I will be sending it back for a refund.
