I'm really happy with Memory Maps. I just use the free 250K one and it covers most of the normal tracks around the Sunny Coast.

You can buy more detailed maps as well.

I run VMS, Hema and PDF Maps (Avenza). All are good. Hema comes with the full suite of Hema 4WD Touring maps. VMS comes with the iTOPO and a bunch of other Maps and you can add (=buy) maps from mud-maps.com (not be confused with mudmaps.com, which is a 4WD tour company). PDF Maps from Avenza provides download of a wide range of free maps as well as paid maps including full VicMap 1:25,000 series. The overlap among these is considerable so not sure it's worth all three but for a sad old maphead like me I can't help myself - starts getting expensive when you "need" the paper maps as well :-(

I played with Memory Maps but didn't like the interface. The best interface from my point of view is Motion X GPS-HD and it is great for planning routes (though it would benefit from the ability to move lines between way points as you can in Memory Maps). The downside is you need a live 3G signal or to download the maps you need ahead of time. The main problem I found with Memory Maps is it seems to be buggy. The advantage of VMS (which I also have) is all the maps are stored on the iPad. Personally I've used MotionX for planning and recording trips and VMS for when I get lost.

I chose between Hema Maps and VMS and ended up opting for VMS based on previous reviews. Hema may be just as good if not better but so far I have seen no need to pay for both. It is quite annoying that Apple do not have a timed trial system that allows you to try before you buy.

Yep... That's the one. Spring sale, 33% off.
I only had it for the iPad. Don't get both which is a shame but hey... $1.99 I got it for the iPhone as well

I have only used it with the 3G connection on my iPad so I'm not sure what can be loaded.
I think Matt (LFaR) has loaded maps though.

Thanks snaga have been reading some of the info and looks like I'll be able to import maps through iTunes once I get them in the right format.

I use BitMap. It reads oziexplorer map files - stores them locally on your ipad so you don't need reception.

                          http://nixanz.com/ios/bitmap/

                          cost is $4.50.

Yes, I've loaded up maps - it's pretty straight forward. You can't cache the google maps because Google doesn't allow it but you can download other road and terrain maps. Obviously the larger the map and greater the detail in the map the more memory you need on your iPhone or iPad. I generally use the iPad for planning and the iPhone as I drive as it fits in a holder on my windscreen (though it does tend to jump out while off road). If needed the iPad is used by the missus to aid with navigation (either using MotionX if the map is pre-loaded or VMS Maps otherwise.

The only feature I'd like to see added to the MotionX iPad app which is already quite well-featured is the ability to move lines around to prepare routes that you can follow [or even through joining waypoints] while driving so you don't have to run the track one time before it's recorded for future travels though you can export the waypoints and do this using third party free software and I suppose finding your way along is half the fun.

                              Hi guys,
I am also a new iPad owner, and I am curious , are you guys plugging in an external gps antenna into the ipad to get your position. I have used motion x on my iPhone and it works really well. And the price is right too. I'm guessing I can use iTunes to save my maps off iPhone and save them onto iPad.....is that right ?
                              Cheers
