There may be options to blue-tooth to an external GPS but much easier just to pay the extra $150 for the 3G iPad. Depending on the software you use you should be able to copy maps between the iPhone and iPad

It still has GPS. Just means you need to preload maps or be on a wifi to use the google maps etc...

... Actually, is that right or does it triangulate towers?

The WiFi iPad DOES NOT have GPS, i.e. if you have pre-loaded maps such as the TomTom or VMS app you cannot use the iPad for navigation, only as a static map.

If you bluetooth to your iPhone though I've heard it can use the GPS / 3G on your iPhone to get reasonable GPS resolution (though not as good as with the built-in GPS) - not sure if this still works if your iPhone loses a 3G signal though. Best is to give it a go and see.

Thanks Snaga and Kieranu for the replies.
Well guys i now have the answer !
If i set up my iphone as a personal hotspot it will communicate the GPS co-ords to the ipad and all works perfectly. I have only tested it in a 3G area so far. I know from previous experience the iPhone's GPS receiver works just as well when out of 3G range, but yet to test if the ipad receives these as well. The guy from apple assured me it does, but i will go for a drive this arvo and test for myself. Then off to the app store for motion-x HD
              Cheers
              Phil
I'm saving the $150 until i've figured it out.

Awesome - please let me know how you go? The missus is about to salary sacrifice a new iPad from work and if the iPhone -> iPad hookup works fine without a 3G signal then it may save a few bucks [mine already has 3G but redundancy is good ].

Kieranu, with the price reductions at the moment ont the Ipad2, we got a WIFI 3G 64Gb on the weekend for less than we were going to pay for a WIFI 32Gb. Your only trouble is going to be finding one - they were walking out the door (about 15 of them in the time we were at JB's). And if there are any left they might get even cheaper tomorrow when the 3 is on sale.

yeah i bought mine which is a 32G wifi only for $529. Have used it through the iphone hotspot for emails and internet which works fine, I already have wifi at home so couldnt justify the extra $150 for the
3G model. I finish at 5.30 so will be going for a drive out of mobile reception to test the GPS functionality.
                    Will post up results tonight
                    Cheers

Apple fixes the prices so I don't think the price will change much unless Apple says so, they already dropped the price of the iPad2 after they announced the new iPad. I already have iPad2 3G so happy for the missus to get the new shiny through work (particularly as it works out as about 50% off retail). Just wondering if it's worth getting 3G or the WiFi will get her by (as I won't be getting a SIM for it regardless).

She can sacrifice the new new shiny 3G for me next March when it comes out

So I drove out of mobile reception area to test, and found that motion x was just continually searching for wifi signals and not locking on anything. At the time the iPad was connected via personal hotspot to the iPhone . I tried connecting via Bluetooth just to double check too.

Whilst I was still in town the wifi tracked me on the map but nowhere as quick and accurate as the gps on the iPhone. Once I left town it only updated if I happened to drive past a restaurant with a hotspot. Other than that it just stopped tracking and continually searched.
                        Bugger!!!!!

If you already have a non 3G iPad then that looks the goods since you can still charge the iPad. Personally, I'd prefer to pay the extra $50 not to have another device to break, lose, ...

I agree and with the $20 bucks postage on top it is only $30 cheaper. Would be a good solution though if you already had the wifi only model and were keeping it for a few years.
