  • 3G tethering to iPad for VMS/Hema app

Has anyone tried or able to test if they can use the 3G on their iPhone and tether it to a non 3G iPad. I would rather do this than have another telstra account. The only time I would need 3G on the iPad would be for the 4WD. Would be good to run the VMS app this way.

You should be able to enable the wifi hotspot on the phone and share the internet connection to the iPad. It appears that the location of the phone can also be shared with the iPad but it is not sharing the GPS data.
If you were 4WDriving in a location without phone coverage, I doubt you would be able to use the VMS App.

It might be better to get a bluetooth GPS and have the maps downloaded to the iPad before you travel.
Disclaimer: I don't own any apple products and I am just rattling off what I have read on my journies through the WWW.

If you have a 3G iPad you do not need a sim card to run VMS app as the maps are stored on the phone and you get the GPS signal through the GPS chip on the iPad. The non-3G iPad has no GPS chip, that's why you need to pair with an iPhone.

So whether or not people are successfully pairing their iPad with an iPhone, you do NOT need a SIM card to use an iPad 3G with the VMS app.

Strangely enough I tried this just yesterday! I was using motion x app on my iPad whilst connected via hotspot to my iPhone 4S. I can definately say that the iPhone does not give the gps data to the iPad. Like you I have a wifi only iPad and wanted to see if could use it as a mapping device, but no joy there. Spoke to an apple store yesterday and he reckons it could be done, so I called him back today to see if I could swap over to a 3G model....still waiting for the call back.
        Cheers

          FYI
I found an external GPS that can plug in to a non 3G ipad, it works with all mapping software. it's called a bad elf. Looks like you have to order it from the states, couldnt find an aussie retailer.

you can use it whilst in airplane mode too, which you cant with the internal GPS.

          cheers

Thanks for the feed back. I have ordered the Dual GPS unit from an eBay retailer. I chose this one over the bad elf because it connects through bluetooth rather than being plugged into the 30 pin connector.

Unfortunately it didn't make it here before a trip to the high country in time for Easter but can let you know soon enough how it goes.

Yes, the 3G iPads all use a microSIM

                    Hi
Interested to here some feedback on how you went with the Dual GPS receiver http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Bluetooth...b#ht_812wt_922 . I'm looking at using my iPad for off road mapping / navigation and I see there's is also a product that plugs into the iPad http://bad-elf.com/products/gps/ that people have previously stated in other threads and I'm unsure which way to go.

                      [QUOTE=Fabes;351478]Hi
Interested to here some feedback on how you went with the Dual GPS receiver...

The dual gps has been ok, it does pause on tracking if you play around with the iPad at the same time and I have found I have to quit and restart the app to pick up the signal again.

I can't say for sure that it's not the vms app though.
