Spot on Brad, in fact if you are looking for any info on my rig build then I have a detailed list of the mod and the post number for each item listed in the first post.

      Hi AJ,
not wanting to hijack this thread, but how do you find the hema app? Still considering buying it. Currently using motion X , but the only trouble with it is the maps don't have many of the off road tracks on them. Still very functional and awesome value for $2.
      Cheers

I don't have the Hema, I have the VMS which is now called Mudmap. The VMS program is very good for me, simple to use and does everything well without having a million bells and whistles that you don't use because its to complicated. I also have the motion X but haven't really come to terms with that, maybe I just haven't tried very hard.

I think most GPS systems fall down in the mapping department, the VMS doesn't have as many tracks marked as I would like and we have pretty much all the maps I am aware of that are available. Skipping between all the maps to find the best one is very simple though. Going across Madigans the topo maps were great, showing almost every sand dune so we could be confident of when we were in the right valley to find each of the camps.

The beauty of the Ipad is if one system doesn't suit then just get another app, I suspect it won't be long and we will run the Hema in conjunction with the VMS and motion X, add to that when you are in areas with coverage you can also use the maps app which gives you satelite or hybrid vision of where you are, which is very useful in some circumstances (like navigating the Maze of tracks around the Beachport to Robe area).

The Hema app has all the info from the Camps book which is invaluable for us when touring and looking for good, cheap or free places to camp, the book is huge and heavy and cost $60 anyway, take that off the cost of the app and what you save in accomodation will pay for it in no time.

        Cheers Andrew

          Hi Andrew,

Do you also run a second GPS unit?

How have you found the standard GPS receiver for coverage?

How easy can you update the VMS maps as they improve?

          Cheers

          Dave

Hi Dave, yes I have a second GPS, the indash "dodgyoptions" unit that is useless as all the functions freeze up all the time, so the Ipad is the only one I actually use. Accuracy and coverage seems to be fine even with the Ipad mounted relativly low in the Prado. I can't recall anytime that the GPS signal has been an issue.

I haven't had to update maps at this stage so can't comment, but I imagine it isn't any harder than updating any other app.

            Cheers Andrew

Thanks Andrew, on the last couple of trips I have been using motion x , but referring back to the hema paper maps to figure out what tracks I'm on, I'm thinking of getting the hema app so no more paper. Will bite
The bullet next time I get paid.
Only a few more little items to get before the GTG.
              cheers

Well I have the I-Pad AND the Hema App.....and going to afix it to the Prado using the "cheapie" stick on velcro option for my forthcoming Cape trip in 3 1/2 weeks. One of my travelling buddies has a Hema Navigator so it will be interesting to see how it all works. As someone else has said, not the end of the world if you had to buy another App (such as Mudmaps) anyway.

Unlike many on here I am not a hardcore fourby person, just like "touring off road" so really all I need is to be able to find my way to or from somewhere.

Last year in the Simpson the group I was with got a bit "lost" on the Lake Poepell bypass.....we were almost the first group through for the season as it had been closed due to Lake Eyre...so when we took the "detour" there were no signs as such as to where we should turn to cross and rejoin the QAA line....as a result we went up the Madigan track for about 30 or 40 Kms and suddenly realised we'd gone too far.

So back we came and still couldn't find which track to go across (there were many but which was the right one!!)...it wasn't until we came to another group (with a Hema Navigator) that we finally found our way to the correct crossing.

No doubt two weeks later it would not have been a problem but as the desert had been closed for 6 months we were as I say "lost".

On that day I said "must get myself a Hema Navigtaor......BUT at $750 I thought, "an I-Pad with the app might do the same and be more versatile".

So we shall see if that thought was right...or not!!

Mark nothing wrong with the cheapie option, but don't use Velcro, u need to 3M picture hanging strips.

For the record, this does work and has as long as i've had my ipad...

tethering to the iphone works perfectly, wether it has service or not... there is a downside to it tho... having wifi on on both devices chews battery kinda fast, not too much of an issue if the phone lives in a cradle and the ipad is plugged in...

i'm in the navy and have actually even used my ipad+iphone setup with a marine navigation app many miles out to sea in a seaboat, which also worked flawlessly, in fact considerably beter than the raymarine unit i had in the boat.

....haven't even really considered using my ipad as a gps in the car tho... i never really got into offroad gps/mapping software... many many many years ago i used ozi on a standalone gps unit i had... but it was a pain to use... perhaps the ipad setup will me a bit more user friendly... will have to have a crack at it.

The new mud map on the ipad looks good.
I like the fact that your dont have to be online for the maps as they are stored locally and that you can use third party maps.

I have only seen it via their website videos, would need to have a real play with it to see how good it is.
What is the quality of the SmartTOPO and westprint maps like. It implys the SmartTOPO goes down to 1:25,000 on the video on their website at 1min:30 sec

Dion, can you explain how you set this up in more detail, I have tried this before and after contacting apple support they conceded that the iPhone 4S does not send gps data to iPad 2.
It will however give an approx location if it is receiving wifi signal, and can approximate your position from this. There is an external gps device you can plug in to your iPad to give it gps functionality. Available from US only I think at this stage.
