Well we decided to add the Hema app to our Ipad today, we already have the VMS (Mudmap) app and have been reaasonable happy with that. However the Hema also has all the camps marked from the "camps" book and a few other little things. It will be interesting to switch between the 2 and see which one is "the best".

Will be good to not have to haul the camps book around, its a great book and saved us heaps, but its pretty big nowadays.

    Cheers Andrew

I should have added to this since my return from Cape York, remiss of me to do so.

I found the I-Pad with Hema app bloody great, but will admit to never having anything like this before (other than a Tom Tom for city use).

Obviously it's not "turn by turn" (and I knew that) but the maps are great and you know exactly where you are at any given point.

The tracking is good (for after you return) and the on the fly information is handy as well.....I just have to master the "create a route" part of the App, still haven't exactly mastered that.

BUT for a novice bloody handy indeed!!

The one downside.....the I-Pad charge lasts about a days travelling AND the I-Pad won't charge off the normal plug in cord that will charge my I-Phone (I know why now).....so luckily I have a little 300W Inverter that runs off my second battery and this will charge the I-Pad in about 2 hours every night without impacting the battery in any great way.

I'll certainly be running it next year on my CSR Trip....as I said also a great record of where you have been (if using the tracking part).

I did use the Top Maps on the OTT and found them good as well.....don't know if it compares with the Hema Navigator (never used one), but certainly good enough for what I need.

      Cheers guys

Yeah I agree AJ, there's LOTS of stuff on the maps, points of interest, camp spots.....when we were in Bamaga we went looking for the old WW2 planes, the Hema Maps on I-Pad took us straight there!!

I looked at the VMS one, read some stuff on here (and Explore Oz) and decided on Hema....must say I'm happy!!

There a pretty good write up in Pat Callinan's recent magazine about mapping choices in the iDevice range

I think the "hard core" boys would want more. All that "downloading tracks and following" stuff is byond my technical know how PLUS I don't need it. For me it's just handy to know I am on the right track, how far away a turn is (and if I have missed it, it will show where I have gone wrong so I can go back) plus as I said it's a great record of where I have been.

I am sure the guys who are really into their navigation will say "pfft almost a waste of time"....but for me (who already had an I-Pad), $150.00 for this great little app, with all the Hema Maps I could ever want, is just perfect.

So for me a 10 out of 10!!

              Heya Mark,

We had the same charging issue with our Ipad when we couldn't charge off the USB socket next to the gear shifter. Instead we bought a 12v cig lighter charger which outputs to the Apple plug, this was able to maintain the charge during the day, however if you run the tracking part of the software the 12v won't keep up. Then at night to top it up we plugged it into a 12v socket which ran off the second battery in the rear of the car. That way you don't have to have the power on for the inverter.

              Hope this helps.

              Cheers

              Dave

Thanks for that link Shan - just ordered one. I had the same problem as others with the ipad discharging faster than it would charge, bit of a bugger when your on a mountain track trying to find your way to a place you haven't been before!!

Bit the bullet today and purchased Hema app for the ipad.
Firstly I purchased a bunch of itunes gift cards from EB Games who had them on special 2 x $20 cards for $30
                    - works out 25% off.
Bought 8 for $120, and loaded them on to my itunes account.
Then downloaded the app - took maybe 15 minutes.
                    Still have $10.01 credit leftover.
So the Hema app cost me $109.99 instead of $149.99.
                    Bargain!!

Didn't think of doing that. What a great way to get something off the itunes store at a discounted price.

                        I have a question...

To plan trips with waypoints, tracks etc with Oziexplorer you need to have paid for the desktop version so you can do all the planning etc, and then download the "plans" onto the Windows CE or Android GPS device.

For the ipad apps like Hema, Memory-Maps etc do you have the capability to do trip planning on the device or do you need to prepare the plans beforehand and copy them across as per Oziexplorer. I don't mean can display and plot a waypoint or capture a track log as you go.
