  • Navman MY85XLT GPS OK?

    Hi all,

Haven't been on for a while but I'm re-visiting the "Which GPS" question for a few reasons. I've been looking at the Navman MY80T and MY85XLT models as both can run Hema maps (downloadable for a fee on the Navman site). DSE currently have the MY85XLT for $198 which is only $1 more than the MY80T. Feature wise the MY85XLT has a 5" screen vs 4.7" on the MY80T, it also has voice input for entering the destination address. Other than that I haven't been able to find any other differences.

I've read some negative comments on other forums about the MY85XLT but I'm wondering if these people are just expecting too much from a GPS, after all they aren't there to replace our brains LOL. Is there any reason other 4WD owners can give to not get this unit?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 smartphone but I find the screen display area just a little too small for practical navigation use and the Navigon app seems to be a cut down version.

    Cheers,
    Fido666

From my research on the previous version, the Hema maps are basically a line for the track, they don't look like they do in Ozi. Would pay to check if this is still the case.

They don't show any samples of the HEMA maps on the Navman website so not sure how I can check. Since I do most of my driving in the city and burbs I wanted a GPS that had city friendly features but with the ability to be used off-road on occasion, that's where the HEMA maps come in handy. I realise I could get one of those cheap generic eBay jobs and load Ozi on it but most seem to have a pretty basic feature set and plain jane nav app where city use is concerned.

Here's the review on the MY75T, Hema maps will look the same as this

My experience with Navman's later products haven't been great. They used to be really good but I heard rumors that they got bought out or moved their manufacturing to a "cheaper option". Since then quality has gone down hill. That's just my opinion anyways.

I have the MY85XLT, which I just use around town.
Have not used all the options but generally find it a good unit and at the current price it is good value.

One annoying thing I have found is that there are constant alerts when service roads join a motorway.

However the alert for exceeding speed limit (mine is set to 5km over) and the visual alert of current speed limit is good when going from a 70 to a 60 speed zone.
Also I like the school zone alert which apart from visual is also spoken.

I have one of these as well. My main use for it is around town, mainly when I go away interstate to places that I don't know and I find that it works well. I find it easy to use and the directions are easy to follow. As Pedro said the speed alerts are really handy as well.
I'm not sure about the Hema maps as I still use my old Magellan crossover for offroad use. I have heard that the Hema maps for the Navman are just a strip map of popular 4x4 trecks but I would be keen to hear from anyone who has it to find out what they're like.

Is the over speed limit alert audible as well as visual? I could have used that a couple of weeks ago :-(

It's listed as a $39 download on the Navman site, not sure exactly which maps you get for your money. The maps used to come pre-loaded on the MY60T, now you have to pay if you want them, don't think the My60T is available anymore.

I have purchased the MY85XLT and registered but can't for the life of me figure out how to access map updates. My device is currently listing these map versions :-

                    Core mapping - Navteq 2011Q1
                    Safety cameras - Navteq 2010Q4
                    Travel guides - WCities 2011.02.14

                    Are these the latest versions?

I did get an email following my registration which says "Successful claimants will be advised by email to download their new maps when they are available for the 36 months following the date of purchase. ". Does that mean I have to wait for an email with a download link?

ETA: NVM, I worked it out. You have to have Navdesk open on your PC, DVD in the DVD drive, plus GPS connected & on. I now have these maps loaded :-

                    Core - Navteq 2011Q4
                    Cameras - Navteq 2012.02
                    Travel - WCities 2011.02.14

I'm happy with the Navman so far, it seems pretty accurate at picking up speed zones and highlighting camera sites. It did get us lost on our first outing but that's probably because we didn't have a street number for our destination. I used the "center of road" option and it ended up taking us many km's away from where we should have been, took a right instead of a left I think. Have not tried downloading Hema maps yet as I haven't been anywhere that needs them.

I'm not familiar with the VMS units. Most of my driving is city based, that's why the Navman appealed. Having the HEMA map option was just a "nice to have" not a "must have".
