Re: Topographical Off-Road Navigation - What's your solution?

They're 250k scale, I like to have my garmin unit zoomed right down. When the shonky maps are zoomed right down on the garmin unit it ends up being about 100-150m out. The shonky maps are fine when used in the 250 perspective but for me, no good, I like the detail I get on the 50k.

EDIT - Just so you know, obviously when you zoom right down on the computer wih a 250k it goes all blurry, on a garmin unit when you zoom right down it re-draws itself so you can be looking at only a few metres. I

Re: Topographical Off-Road Navigation - What's your solution?

I use OziExp CE on a HP4700 that I have had for a nunber of years, coupled with a Blutooth GPS receiver.
I have been using both CE and windows versions of OziE for a number of years now (since the very early days of oziE) so know my way around it well.

I am starting to wonder what I will replace the hp4700 with when it gives up - it is getting fairly old now, must have had it for 5 years. I am thinking about one of the small portables now available, but recent inovations and configurability on OziCe make it attractive so may go for a Chinese nav unit. Problem with that is I need something that I can take away from the car for use walking or in the yatch with no external power available.
I have a large library of maps, but usually use the 1:250,000 series when away from the city and a set of street maps for Perth in the city for driving.

I will use other scale maps, air photos and google when trip planning.

50k detail is definitely better than 250k, but the inaccuracies in the 250k mapset are often due to the difficulties of drawing items close together yet still keep them separate on the map at it's print resolution. If you are zooming past the equivalent of the paper map you will start to see bitrot. GA have confirmed that they have to 'move' some roads etc a small distance so that other items of interest can be discernible on the map.

Contours Australia have closer contours than shonky on their GPS contour map if you want them. This is also pretty good, but I find it best to look out of the window from time to time as the topography on the maps is based on satellite data and may be subject to error (or error correction)

Invariably, I find it's best to have several choices of maps, often one has tracks that the other missed out.

Re: Topographical Off-Road Navigation - What's your solution?

This is my cheap version of the navigator

cost $120 from ebay for the inlaws. They had heaps of trouble running the rout66 software, so I converted it to OZECE.

I am currently scanning required pages from this book for my more detailed areas of interest, also have the 250K map set and most of HEMAs collection, although for 250K, I still prefer the Roads and Track book.

I did have UBD maps for towns in WA, but I seem to have misplaced them when I changed over computers........still trying to find them again

EDIT: - I should also add I use a NAVMAN F20 for around town work and as a back up and when I leave the vehicle, I have a GARMIN Etrex Camo.

Len, don't get done for copyright breaches if your scanning and then reproducing it into an electronic format, seriously it could end up being a repeat of the Polaris thread, if you meant something else than how I've read it, please accept my apology for misunderstanding the post.

If you need legit and accurate topo maps that are pretty darn accurate and also free of cost, have a look at the thread I started for Noni view. It is legit and converts google topo maps into ozi maps, you can overlay satellite, and normal street maps as well, all of them geo referenced.

It chews up some memory but for your more detailed areas of interest, it is perfect. If you can teach yourself how to use ozi mapmerge, then you can end up making some fairly impressive topo maps.

Re: Topographical Off-Road Navigation - What's your solution?

The only way I could get done, is if I hand out the electronic maps, and that is one thing I will not do. All maps and OZE are stored on a separate SD card and are only loaded into the GPS when needed. I also take the book with me as well, you never know when electrics decides to stop!

The track book is the clearest I have seen in a while, will have a look at your thread though, sounds interesting.

May email the publishers and see if they do an electronic version of the book, would make it a lot easier.

Re: Topographical Off-Road Navigation - What's your solution?

My solution to the original question is a cheap Chinese unit from Brash Imports. It has IGO navigation software standard and comes with a reversing camera. The nav software is on a 4Gig SD card, so I have loaded Ozi CE and some maps onto the card as well. In the Systems setting, I choose the path to the navigation software that I want to use. It's a bit clunky in that I haven't found a way to make it turn on and off with the ignition (Windows Mobile is all in Chinese, and I am struggling a bit there), but it works, and the reversing camera is useful.

Matt advised best to contact Ozi Explorer to see whether file could convert to their system. As only have demo version on the AVN11TP, and have not invested further $$ for full version of Ozi, at least have magellan WA topo maps on Explorist 310 GPS handheld now??

Has anyone used the HEMA iPad app? On the iPad 2 it uses non data GPS and works quite well. We used it exclusively on our last Simpson desert crossing. It does more than the Navigator 5, is cheaper considering the hardware is usable with many other apps/programs. I'm replacing my head unit with a an iPad full of apps like this.

Been using Magellan Triton 1500 for past 4 years. Just sent the SD card over east to get DiscoverOZ topo upgrade to version 3. Apparently has updated maps, points of interest and better contour detail. I have yet to travel a track that isn't on this mapping data.
