  • Hema App or Memory Map App

    iPad 3G

After reading threads on here and the Internet I must confess that I'm a bit confused.
What is the difference between buying the Hema 4x4 App and buying the Memory Map App that uses Hema Maps?

It appears that if I were to buy the memory map app that it can also have the UBD street directories added to it, can the same be done with the Hema 4x4 App?

What would those in the know recommend?

I'm in the same boat, found the following response from Hema in exploroz forum:

    Hema Maps Pty Ltd replied:
    Hey Everybody,

I thought now seemed like an appropriate time to throw our 2 cents into the mix before everyone goes running off with ideas all over the place.

The HEMA Australia 4WD app is based off the Memory map app, however where they differ greatly is the amount of data that is supplied as standard. The HEMA app comes preloaded with over 70 HEMA maps that cover every part in Aus in one form or another hence the initial 1.5GB download.

Due to the Memory map connection it does mean that if you have the HEMA Memory Map Raster DVD then you are able to load the mapping into the Memory Map free app or the HEMA USA road Atlas app as well. However if you don’t already have the Memory Map DVD then it does work out better priced to simply purchase the HEMA Australia 4WD app. With the HEMA app you still have the opportunity to invest in any of the other Memory map products through the digital map shop.

In regards to people with the HEMA 4WD Raster DVDs, due to the different formats they are not able to be copied into a Memory Map based product, including the Australia 4WD app. However as the disk is in Ozi format it is possible to load this disk into the Ozi Android app.

The maps that are supplied on the DVDs are slightly different to the ones in the App itself. The biggest difference is rather than having an individual map that has been designed by HEMA for all of Australia, the DVD has the standard 7 part Geoscience map for Australia. There will also be a number of small changes to some of the maps, most of which won’t be overly noticeable. The reason for this is that the disks and their content are from our map range in late 2010 and the maps on the Australia 4WD app are more recent.
I hope that answers all the questions but if you have any more feel free to post them up and I will answer them to the best of my ability for you.

If you want road navigation, try the Metroview application. I have it on my iPad and my wife has it on her iPhone and it works great. I think it was only $14.

I went with Memory-Map as it was just as confused and at that price I thought it was worth having a play. I then paid for the full VicTopo maps

Happy with the results but I have not tried The Hema application to compare.

Dejo's 'copied in' reply is correct, although the original poster made it difficult to decypher.

Simple answer is; that if you buy the MemoryMap app, you are just buying the app, there are no usefull included maps. You can download some maps for free (such as the 1:250,000 scale map of Australia), or buy additional maps.

If you buy the Hema app, you are getting the MemoryMapp app, and all of the Hema maps in MemoryMap format. So what you are really paying for with the Hema application, are the Hema Maps, the app itself is the same (MemoryMap)

With both versions, you can add additional maps, but they must be in the MemoryMap format, not in Oziexplorer, or Garmin format, etc. Some are free, some must be bought/licenced.

There is a way of converting some Oziexplorer format maps into MemoryMap format, but there is some software that must be purchased in order to do so - plus the time and effort involved. Only really worthwhile if you already have a large collection of OziExplorer format maps.

        I hope that's a simple enough explanation.

What software have you used for this process John? I was looking at it a little last night as I have loads of Ozi maps, and no money to buy MemoryMap maps...

Thanks for your replies guys, appreciate your input.
I'm leaning towards forking out the coin for the Hema App and I should have all the maps I'll be needing for quite sometime then.
            Cheers Shane

              There's a few items needed, and it's not always a simple (or possible) task. But here goes;

              - First off you need the PC version of MemoryMap (free download). You do though need to purchase a licence for the "Import 3rd Party Maps" feature for $50 http://memory-map.com.au/mapping-sof...-software.html

              - DeMapper.exe is next. This will convert the image file associated with an oziexplorer map into a PNG file. ie: It will convert your ozfx2 and some ozfx3 files into PNG files. Some of the later ozfx3 format files are encoded, and cannot be converted.

              - DRGMapCal232 follows. This converts the ozi .map file into a .jpr file. Map files are the ozi calibration files, and .jpr is a calibration format memorymap can understand/import. Again, there can be issues converting the files. DRGMapCal does not recognise the datum GDA94. If you have any map files using this datum you'll need to use the Oziexplorer PC version to change the datum to WGS84 and save the updated .map file first.

There is some costs with the above, but I can't remember which one I had to pay for, or how much. Wasn't too expensive though.

              - Lastly you need to setup the PC version of MemoryMap and import the maps to convert them. Once you've licenced the 'import' feature, display the 'map list' window, and click on 'Refresh Map List'. The window shown should have a section at the very bottom for the 'folder containing converted maps'. Set this to your prefered directory. All imported/converted maps will be saved in this location. Now add the folder that contains your jpr/png files for the maps you wish to import into the ist of map folders. Make sure you tick the 'load all maps now' option, and click on 'OK'. This will import the maps you have defined in the jpr/png files, convert them, and save the converted results in memorymap format (qct) in the specified folder. When done, remove the folder containing the jpr/png files from the map file folder list - so it no longer reads from there.

The qct files can now be loded into memorymap on your PC, iPhone, iPad, etc.

A fair bit of pain, but like you I had many files in oziexplorer format that I wanted to convert. I hope the info helps...........

Ok. For an avid user of Ozi Explorer on PC and WinCE GPS devices, who now owns an Android Tablet and phone, does Memory Map / Hema App have any functionality that Ozi does not, and which would be worth the stuffing around involved in moving to Hema? I have more maps in ozi than I care to stuff around converting. So, only some form of 'function' that isn't available with Ozi would make me move.

So, thoughts on whether the move is worth it from those of you who have used both would be appreciated! I'm not meaning to hijack this thread. Given the discussion surrounding Ozi maps anyway, this question is a logical extension....

If you've got Android devices, just load up the OziExplorer Android version and you're done.

The MemoryMap app doesn't have any additional functionaility over OziExplorer, it's simply that Des (writter of OziExplorer) has not developed an iPhone/iPad app, so other alternatives are needed for people with those devices - MemoryMap is just one of those alternatives.

I picked up a google nexus 7 3g (android platform) recently and have loaded up both Ozi explorer and Memory map on it. I find the Memory Map app to be a more developed UI compared to the Ozi explorer one in my view.
Memory map only comes with one Aus Map. You can download a 10 day trial on any of the hema maps before buying. I downloaded the Eastern Australia one the other day and used that on a recent trip ans worked well.
If you are to buy the map it is $39

Alternatively if you have an iPad,I notice Hema were doing the ipad app on a christmas special for about $129. So a bit off there. If you use some of the itunes discount cards,( ie buy $40 pay for $30 that many retailers have been selling) you can pick it up about $100, which think is a good buy with all the maps and the app.Just my thoughts.

On another note. The Hema maps for many of the states seem pretty good, but for QLD they are rather average. It has the cape, fraser, but would be nice if they have more of QLD covered.

                            Cheers

On my Hema app there are a few more than that for Queensland, Gulf country, a couple around the Lawn hill area, north East Desert map covers a lot, maybe a couple of others as well, and teh topo map.

Of course the beauty of the Ipad (tablet) is I can always switch to Mudmaps, or motion X, or google (signal permitting), lots of options for finding out where you are.

                              Cheers Andrew
