if you have the 3G Ipad it has an inbuilt GPS, so no connection to the net should be nescessary!Originally posted by Shimple View PostTried the ipad, but most of the time in the high country, there is no connection, so u cannot follow where u actually are. is there a workaround i don't know about?
Although it was with teh VMS app I navigated using the Ipad across Madigans in the Simpson, that is about as far from anything you can get and had no issues knowing where I was.

VMS as in VMS GPS's, http://www.vms4x4.com/ its called Mud Maps now!Originally posted by Shimple View PostAndrew,
VMS app? Video message service? How goes it?
It works just like any other GPS except the Ipad is more universal. I woulkd think that the Hema app would be the same.
If you use a program that runs with google maps then I think you need service, the Maps app is like that and I think some of the others like Motion X seem to be the same, but heaps cheaper than the stand alone apps with maps included.

Thanks for that, i have researched mud maps, but havent taken the plunge due to $$$. Some reviews are good and some are bad. Was waiting to it in action face to face before making my own mind up.Originally posted by AJ120 View PostVMS as in VMS GPS's, http://www.vms4x4.com/ its called Mud Maps now!2005 GXL V6 - 2" Lift, Redarc isolator, Anderson(6B&S) Plug, 60L Waeco, Draw System, 60L Water tank, Delavan Powerflo Pump, Sovereign Bar, Hella Spotties, RoofCage, Sidewinder MK4 Compressor, BFG A/T, Safari Snorkel.

If you add your location to your profile so we can see where you are, then someone close by might be able to give you a demo.Originally posted by Shimple View PostThanks for that, i have researched mud maps, but havent taken the plunge due to $$$. Hema has a good selection of maps across National Parks, state maps and regional maps like the Top End etc. I have used Hema plus itopo on a VMS gps for a good few years now and when upgrading to the iPad the natural choice was to go with what I knew and liked and so went with HEMA maps. Currently have approx. 80 of the above maps on the iPad which also sync with the iPhone so I can use either. Never found it wanting for accuracy and detail when in remote locations 4wd'ing. The maps are value for money in my opinion. Don't know about their support as I haven't needed to use them which I suppose says something for the product.
Having said that, I also loaded the MudMaps HD version on the iPad as it has a much larger range of maps available that gives another level of detail over the HEMA maps for bush walking, mountain biking, canoeing, streams for fishing etc. All up I've downloaded close to 1,500 maps which is too much sometimes but still easy and quick to load the map/s when and where I want. The last two MudMap version upgrades included free maps from major makers which would have cost around $150. Can't complain about that and glad I bought the 64gb iPad. Have used their Support for a few minor things and in my experience they set the benchmark for excellent customer service.
I also use Motion X where the user can view the trip using road, terrain or satellite. Pretty cool using google or bing satellite mapping to see where you are heading up Blue Rag or camped at Chilli Beach. Gives a great wider perspective of the environs we travel through and what's coming up ahead, cattle grids, hairpin bends etc.Tony

Well I'm confuseder than ever.
If I had to buy one app, which one is recommended?? Seems a case of 6 of one, half a dozen of the other...
I take it that neither MudMap nor Hema apps has street navigation - I have my TomTom for that anyways.
Appreciate your views - though expect the responses to be 50/50 each camp!!

Mud Maps does come with street navigation called SmartTOPO which seems to work ok. Not real clear if after a set time limit you need to subscribe to further updates. Like an annual subscription. They have a support forum that has Q&A's if people needed more info or even post a question.
Most people have voice navigation gps (like TomTom) for around cities & towns. I use my portable VMS voice guidance gps in my falcon as well as wanting a reversing camera, iPod connection, Bluetooth etc. in the Prado, I just installed a new Mongoose double din head unit that comes with iGo voice navigation. Type in where you want to go and follow the directions. Mud Maps can do that as well (without voice guidance) but in my limited use, not quite as good as the dedicated city type gps.
Both Mud Maps and HEMA come into their own out on the iconic tracks we all like to travel and I'd be happy using either. Mud Maps is pushing out more and more maps (including freebies) in the version updates and they seem keen to be a key player in map navigation. Still I couldn't see myself traveling to more remote locations without my HEMA maps. So maybe 60/40 for me!Last edited by wastegate; 19-09-2012, 03:42 PM.Tony
