Great forum! Proud new owner of a black D4D auto (after 5 months wait). I had a Pioneer AVIC HD3 installed prior to picking her up and noticed the steering wheel volume/mode buttons are inoperative. At this stage I'm assuming that the Pioneer doesn't interface with the Prado steering wheel controls. Can any other Pioneer AVIC owners verify this please.
Was chatting to a Car Sound Installer today and he said that the AVIC HD3 CAN interface with the PRADO steering wheel controls ... needs a "black box" that connects to the steerring whel connector and to the "wired remote control input" interface... Cost about $270
I'll think I'll go to another installer, my original one indicated that it wasn't possible but I sensed that he just wasn't interested (maybe it's a real bugger of a job)
I am getting this in apparently that does the trick, unfortunately it wasn't available on the day the unit itself went in, so haven't actually used it, but was assured it will work...
Steering wheel adaptor - PACSWIPS. Able to learn any action on your GPS
I just purchased the PAC SWI-PS from ebay for $65US delivered (~$70AUS). This is a hell of a lot cheaer than $249 quoted from Stinger (international distributor) this morning.

Well I was told by my Toyota dealer that the steering controls work, Toyota are fitting these units officially now under full warranty so you would expect everthing to work perfectly.
Although Im told the Pioneer AVIC HD3 units supplied by Toyota are unavailable elsewhere so maybe they are tweaked a little.
I paid $3995 fully fitted, which isnt that bad considering the price of the unit and the peace of mind of Toyota fittting it and the 3 year warranty.
That also includes the rear camera.
Im hoping to have the car Saturday so I'll keep anyone whose interested informed.
how did you go on Saturday picking your prado up? Did the steering wheel controls work? Perhaps the installer used the SWI?
I didnt get the car saturday, its been put back to Tuesday. Apparently they have special tech guys who install the Pioneer system, the Toyota guys dont do it. So its due to be fitted Tuesday (5/6 hour install they reckon)

Hi Nath,
got the car today only to discover that the steering wheel controls do not work. Obviously im not too happy about this, my salesman assures me that this will be rectified.
Im going back tommorrow to see them.
Well Im not accepting that from Toyota, I would expect all the functions to work properly, I think its fair to assume that the steering wheel controls should work without extra cost.
The manual also says that you can recieve calls using the steering wheel controls, that would be quite handy i reckon. (you can then answer the phone without your eyes leaving the road at all)
Ok I rang my dealer today with my complaints and to their credit they sent the installer round to my workplace to address them.
I do indeed require a seperate box to operate the steering wheel controls, he is fitting this friday (free of charge)
Also the rear camera doesnt come on when selected from the head unit as it should (only when I hit reverse) he says he will fit a switch which will address this.
He is also supplying and fitting the Ipod connection.

Pomp
I was told that the camera could either be connected to an 'aux' input OR connected to reverse input. Aux meaning you could select it whenever you want and reverse obviously coming on automatically in reverse. Mine is connected to the latter but I would like to be able to view the camera while driving for checking the camper trailer hook up etc.
Can you please let us know if your installer gets this working and if possible how he does it.

you can have the rear view camera on as you are driving by navigating thru the Map menu. This is a standard feature of the AVIC-HD3.
Touch 'Map' in the navigation section, select 'View Mode', from there touch 'rear view'. That allows the rear camera to display in 2/3 of the screen while driving, while the map of your suriundings is indicated on the other 1/3 of the screen.

Cheers Mardo,
I did try that but the left side of the screen is just blank, I believe it depends on the actual camera thats installed to be able to use this function, it needs an additional output or something.
