  • Hema App for Android Devices

Good news, I hear that Hema App for Android is coming. A similar setup to the ipad with all the maps.
For Android users at the moment you need to get memory map and load the Hema maps to replcate similar functionality.

Another vote for Oziexplorer. Easy to use, heaps of features and easy to use with all sorts of maps. Cheap. A winner!

Yes good points, it was just a FYI. I have Androzic, OziExplorer and Memory Map on my Android tablet.
I like memory map but cant beat Androzic for price as not only is it free you can use the standard ozi maps with it fine.
I expect the Android Hema app will appeal to manny as if you are after all the latest HEMA maps, this works out the cheapest way to get them.
        Cheers

          Gday gumboot.
Im about to 'get with the times' and get myself either a dedicated gps or a tablet with maps...
With all the mapping products you currently have on your tablet, do they act as a gps?
My main question is around seeing your current location and tracking your path.
Im totally new to this style of navigation, so i guess im keen to find out what works well.
          Cheers. Drew.

Please be aware it is not a Hema application you are buying but a Hema skin over a 3rd party product solution.

This was posted by Hema on the 4WDa forum

            "Hey Guys.

Just thought I would jump in here to ensure that everyone has the right information.

Yes Hema will be releasing an Android App. Yes it is a skinned version of the Memory Map App. While I dont know all the fine details, the App will be released with a full suite of Hema maps.

Mud Map is correct, Hema is a mapping company and not a software development company so we rely upon 3rd party Apps. This does however mean that we spend more time focusing on creating the best maps possible.

I will let you all know more as soon as we have a more accurate release date."

              Drew,
It depends what you want out of a navigation solution.
I run a 7inch Android tablet with both a street GPS and 4wd maps.
For the street navigation I use Google maps which is free and excellent on Android. It has turn by turn navigation just like a Tom-Tom. If you have a tablet with no mobile receiver built in , you can download the Google maps for offline viewing without a data connection. A bit more fiddly than a Tom-Tom on the dash then. But I would suggest getting one with a mobile receiver and a cheap Telstra data plan as it is a lot more flexible and then you dont have download Google maps offline and all is sweet.

But for 4wd navigation it is excellent and really comes into its own. I tend to use Androzic or Memory maps with the Hema maps depending where I am. It gives you proper waypoint navigation and all the offline GPS functionalty you need. Note you dont need a mobile data connection as you have the maps stored on the devoice, but if you have one memory map is smart enough to offer you a new map download if you are going into an area you dont have a map and it knows one is available, if you have mobile coverage ( you have to pay for the map though if you dont already have it after an eval period)
Here is a view of the hema map app on the ipad.

You could use either an Android tablet or a iPad, both devices do very similar things as per above.
IF i had a 150 prado I would have got a full size ipad and mounted it as Hutch has. He has a great cheap mounting system worked out.
For the 120 that doesn't easily fit, so I use a Ram-Mount with a 7 inch tablet and find that is perfect for me.
I can also use the tablet for audio, internet, email, movies, so you can a lot of uses out of the Tablet verses a dedicated GPS in my view for the money. Any specific quesitons, let me know.

              Cheers
              Robert

                Hey robert.
You have answered my questions perfectly.
All the functions that you are currently utilising would be absolutely fantastic whilst on the road.
In regards to the ram mount, do you find it stable / secure for off roading & corrigated roads?
I have been enquiring about a dedicated hema or vms but i think a ipad / tablet is looking like the way to go.
Is the ram mount you use the same as examples shown in the 'mounting an ipad' thread?
                Cheers. Drew.

                  Drew,
The ram mount I use has no movement it in at all. It has a spring mounted scissor action so holds the unit very tightly and I make sure the lower mount points rests on my dashmat just to be sure. I havent had any issues with it and looked at a lot of mounting options for my 120.
Below is a photo of it with the Hema Fraser map.

I guess I should start a build thread and put these photos up....
                  Cheers

After looking at all the options on different threads here on PP, I think that looks like it would suit me just fine.
Could i please ask where you bought that ram mount from?
And also a model type / number for it...

For me I liked the Samsun Tab 2 7" but they are very similar in spec etc. I liked the idea of the microsd slot over and above the 32gb onboard. It is an android and maybe samsung thing but most software cannot use the external sd card for applciation use but oziexplorer doesn't care where my 16GB of maps are (ext sd card) plus it gived me space to drop edisode of the simpsons and other PDF files without consuming the internal SD memory which all the apps like memory map use.
