  • Hema Navigator

Last night my car got broken into and I lost a few things like my fishing rods and Hema Navigator. So now I have to go shopping to replace my toys. What I want to know is should I upgrade my Hema to the HN6, buy the app for my mini iPad or can someone recommend something better.

There's quite a few threads on it in GPS Chat, allegedly the wifi versions don't work as they don't have an internal GPS. I just picked up 3 $50 iTunes cards from Coles @ 20% off so will download it Tommorow. It is a large file though about 1.5 gb, so you'd want a reasonable size iPad so you don't use heaps of memory just for your maps. Dreamon that sucks getting broken into, good luck sorting everything out.

Yep downloaded it last week so I could use it Saturday for the Vic day run, then it comes back on special this week... Doh! It's fairly easy to use, but depends how much detail you want, there's plenty of spots in Vic were it would be handy to have the topo mp for more detail and more track names. It shows you were you've been and very easy to scroll around to see what else is nearby. Last night I had a look at the Fraser map, this is a topo with plenty of detail and very easy to plan a trip. So there are state maps and then detailed maps of popular areas. If you can get some discounted iTunes and get I on special it's worth the $. I have ordered a ram mount pole and a slip grip bracket that suits my heavy duty iPad case, this will make it even easier to use in the car.

              Hope that helps.

                SOL.
Definitely don't need phone coverage but you need the 3G as it has the GPS function inbuilt. I used the ipad to navigate across Madigans Line in the Simpson desert with no track to follow and it worked perfectly, as good as if not better than any other GPS.

Personally with the advent now of the ipad mini I think that dedicated GPS units will go the way of the dinosaur, they can do everything a dedicated unit can and so much more.

                Cheers Andrew

Is it the Hema Maps app that's being referred to in thread for IPad ? I'm thinking bout taking the plunge too - have seen Hema Maps app advertised on ARB Facebook page for $129.99 (is this good price ?)

Its a good discount. If you also get some 20% or 25% off itunes gift cards, it almost brings it down to about $100AUD.

Or you could use your Android phone as a pocket wifi hotspot instead.

I upgraded to the HN6 a month ago and love it. I do like having a specific GPS unit on the dash, not needing to remember my iPad mini every time I drive anywhere.

Both options have their benefits I suppose...
