How much was mud map before?

Sounds reasonable, now we just need 20% off iTunes at Coles then it will be $80 :-)

Are all maps included with mud map? Or do you have to buy more?

You get all the maps with mud map, at least we did when it was still VMS. We also have the Hema app which I think is the better of the 2.

        Cheers Andrew

Hey Andrew it's interesting a few people do like the hema better. The ratings for mud map is 4.5 as opposed to 3.5 for hema.
Is it because of the maps & detail or the app operation it's self you like?

IMO there are a few maps lacking on the hema. They don't have detailed maps of Tassie for one example.
Also my local area. Wombat forest, it's huge & very popular in melb, hema have no tracks there just he 250k dirt roads only.
Hema is disappointing so far, especially for those that paid $150 for it.

I think in general the Hema maps have more detail than mud maps, that would be the main difference. Having said that, both could with more detailed maps.

One of the great things about the I pad is that it's easy to have multiple systems to work out where you are, we swap around a bit depending on where we are and which app has the best map. The Maps app is also really useful if you have service, you can look at satellite pics of where you are and compare that to the maps.

As one comparison between the 2 apps, on my Madigans trip I only had the mudmaps, so I had toput in co-ordinate a for the camps, the Hema has these already marked, so much better in that instance.

                Cheers Andrew

I have a wifi only model and have been reading that I need an external gps receiver, thats's fine I can buy one but before I do I just wondered if anyone knows if it is possible to connect my iPad to my iPhone and use the gps on the iPhone as you can with the internet connection?
I have read some where no you can not unfortunately.

I have downloaded the memory maps app (free) and downloaded the hema maps in my area ( free 10 day trial) which are pretty much just scanned paper maps. Wasn't over impressed... With mud maps I believe you can search a place, and it will route you route much like a 'Tom Tom' type GPS program. I welcome pp's running mud maps HD to please comment on this function ...

Here's something I found interesting last night after searching for reviews on MM HD...

Not sure I agree with much the MM guy says in that link.

If you can auto route to a place with MM i can't see how it is done, there is not a lot of options to play with, finding a location is easy but I can't find anything to set a route to it.

Finding a location on the Hema is probably slightly easier, but its almost the same so not worth splitting hairs, cant auto route with the Hema either.

He also mentions the 3000+ maps? really, i go to the download more maps and it says there are none! I certainly don't have 3000 maps on my Ipad. I got a lot more maps with the Hema than with the MM and Hema still has a lot I can buy.

I also find more detail on the Hema maps than the MM, so not sure about that comment from him either.

                    Cheers Andrew

And I wonder why computers frustate me sooooo much!

So to auto route on MM I press the icon that says "menu"

Then it has a list and I select "find a place"

That gives me 4 more "written" options that are easy to follow depending on what I want to find and then I get my location on the map.

It has a thought bubble with the place name in it, pressing this does absolutely nothing at all............ ah but underneath that is another non descript circle with an arrow in it, no writing at all on it and I am supposed to press that to go auto route?

I am sure it is just me but why have written instructions all the way and then throw in something like that at the last point? Honestly when I looked at the screen trying to work it out on my own; that icon didn't even register in my mind.

Anyway I asked Trish to work out the auto route this morning, took her nearly 30 seconds, and also she worked out how to auto route on the Hema app as well in around the same time frame.

As for the maps, I have about 120 or so on MM, probably is easy for someone who understands computers to get more, but a dumbass like me goes to download maps and it says there are none available, so I assume I have all that are available!

                      Cheers Andrew

I would still say the Hema is slightly better. I think the maps are just a bit better in a lot of cases. I think the Hema is a bit easier to navigate around (for a self confessed technophobe). The track logging on the Hema is easy to use but not sure how to do that on the MM.

Honestly though, I paid $800 for my first GPS years ago, a garmin quest which by comparrison is useless, it doesn't even have maps on it. For what the apps are worth if you find your not happy with one, get the other, thats what we did. The pain of the 100 or so dollars to buy the app goes pretty quickly and when you are trying to find something in the middle of nowhere the peace of mind of having multiple options makes it money well spent. But if pushed and a law was passed that I could only have 1 GPS app, Hema would be my choice.

MM also has a few technical issues, every now and then all the maps disappear, you need to turn of the Ipad and reboot it to get it to work. Even this morning when I tried the auto route the first time the app crashed and I had to restart the app for it to work.

                          Cheers Andrew

Kav, I agree! It's pretty budget!

Guys carefull abbreviating MM in same post which mention memory map and mud map.
I'm not sure which one you are talking about.

If we could only get a combination of the 3 apps would be great, so far I like memory map free.
If you spend extra on a few maps they are good.

You can set up a route easily with MUDs, from what I can see I think hema might be better but completely different really. I'd say its the same mob selling all 3 very different app/maps on purpose, then you need more than 1.....?
