  • What suction mount for 7 & 10 inch tablets have you used?

I'm looking for a good suction mount to mount a 7 or 10 inch tablet in the Prado. As the Grande has a sunroof which I don't use, I am looking for a good suction mount to put on the sunroof. It will double duty as a screen to play movies for the kids at the back and I might move it to the front for GPS navigation when movies aren't required.

The RAM suction mounts looks great. Nice and strong but I have never used them before.
This one is a single suction cup

This one is a dual suction cup

The next part of the puzzle is the holder for the tablet. There doesn't seem to be a holder that can take both 7 and 10 inch tablets in the RAM range. If you know of one, let me know.

And then there's all the cheaper mounts you can get from ebay but I'm not sure of how good the suction cup is. If you have experience of any good ones, do let me know.

Are they rated for the weight of tablets?

Not sure on rated weight... but It's pretty hard to pull out even with two hands when it's stuck well

I recently got the RAM mount in your first link to hold my Nexus 7. I haven't had good chance to test it out, but it sure is solid! I coupled it with the X-Grip type holder
2005 Prado TD Grande, 2 inch lift, Powerful 4x4 Rooftop Tent rack, 120w LED light bar, Ironman Snorkel, Leigh's Voltage Booster, Airbag Man Airbags, Homemade Drawers with MSA dropslide, Pacemaker 3 inch exhaust system, Performance EGT gauge, Safari Dtronic Chip

Holding the weight is an important factor. The other is arresting the transmission of vibrations to the tablet. I think this is where the large ball joints and large clamping forces from the RAM mounts are good for.

I was considering the X-grip holders too but wasn't sure if the fingers will hit the side buttons. How strong is the tension of the X-grips?

              Hey Andrew,
We got one of these to mount the iPad on the boat. Great suction, try all you like, they don't come off without releasing them.

Im not Bogged - I've just lost traction. . . . . and now I'm showing the wife why I bought those Maxtrax, and the tyre deflator, and the compressor, and the bullbar, and the winch, and a lot of other goodies I've hidden in the Prado

That's a bit different How strong is the gooseneck in terms of stiffness?

                  Andrew,
It's usually mounted on the underside of the fly bridge roof, holding the iPad.
Bar when going thru heavy swells flat stick, the gooseneck hardly moves. It's quite stiff.

The arms on the X grip grab the outer edge of the tablet, so they don't interfere with the sleep/volume buttons on my Nexus 7. As for grip, I can shake the X-grip holder around with the tablet in it and it doesn't move around at all. Have yet to test out the windscreen suction mount while doing some 4x4ing but I'm certain she'll be right.
