I even have my nexus set up to watch live TV over my wireless network at home.
You know thats a very fair point. My phones data hardly gets used so it would be good to ulise it.
Also the idea of one less monthly bill is attractive as well!
As long as these GPS apps work when not in phone range I will be happy!

Yes, if your use is only local ( in Australia) and you are always near you phone then that can be a very good option.
But if you wife takes you tablet away and wants to use it for example , then she would have to tether it to her phone, Assuming she has one that is capable , or your kids take the tablet but they don't have phones and want internet remote. etc.
In my case I use tablet overseas frequently, and tethering to a mobile on a mobile data plan overseas is as expensive as sin. So I just put a local sim in if I am in China, Indonesia etc for example. I dont do this with my phone as I need my number for work .
For me $50 more was a no brainer but each to their own depensing on your needs

      Cheers

I was only talking about use in Australia, I've had all sorts of phone problems overseas so I stick to wireless at hotels.

          The real question is...

Can the nexus7 be used as a GPS when NOT in internet range?

Krypto... Do you use your tablet as a GPS without having it WIFI linked to your phone?.

More specifically does Memory Maps & Oziexplorer work on the Nexus7 with out an internet connection?

I just bought a 3G model and it was DOA and now there is no more stock in mackay.
I am now considering a WIFI model.

          Cheers guys.

The Nexus 7 (both WIFI and 3G models) has an inbuilt GPS chipset, so it doesn't need a phone signal or internet connection to determine it's position. Both Memory Map and Oziexplorer allow you to pre-load the maps onto the device at home rather than download on the fly, so no net connection is required for use.

I've been using a wifi Nexus7 with Memory Map for a while now (no issues well beyond any mobile phone / net coverage), but I've also used OziExplorer successfully as well. As they come out of the box, I find Memory Map easier to use, but there are more maps available for OziExplorer. I find Ozi's default screen layout too cluttered and cumbersome, but as has been mentioned, you can design your own screen layout on the PC, and load that onto the tablet for use. I'm still tossing up which way to go. Of course you can just install both and use whichever one you feel like at the time (assuming you have enough storage space for all the maps in both formats).

I have a Nexus 7 and utilise Androzic with the same maps from Ozi. Worked brilliantly over Easter as headed out to Einasleigh and it tracked me perfectly the whole way. Very minimal icons on screen that you can remove if you want and good map selection at your current location. It scrolls through all the maps you have at that point so you can choose best option.

Gday john and thanks heaps for that prompt feedback.
You answered my questions perfectly and gave me the correct information for me to move forward with!
Well I'm now the proud owner of a fully working Nexus7 WIFI tablet.
I'm thinking of starting a Nexus7 reference thread as there is a few of us who own these now.
I'll leave it at that and see you in the Nexus7 thread.

Do you know if it's a "proper" GPS or A-GPS (assisted). What I found with my Android phone is that the GPS needs to get the location and almanac data from the phone/wifi. If it didn't have a data connection then it took a very long time to find itself - 10-15mins. If it had a data connection then it would be a heap quicker. The A-GPS chipsets are cheaper/use less power because they have less powerful positioning engines in them.

How long does the Nexus7 take to find its location if you turn off all the data (wifi/3G)?

It usually only takes a few seconds to lock on satellites if there are no major overhead obstructions
