  • Nexus 7 - Android Tablet Reference Thread.

    Gday guys.
Well after some excellent help from Gumboot, Krypto & Prado4x4, I purchased a Nexus7.
I have been thinking that surely there would be other member that will have many questions about setting these tablets up as a GPS, so here is the place to fumble your way through and get some advise.

Well to be honest, I'm about to start setting it up myself and I'm sure I'll need some help...

I guess I should start the thread with some info on my Nexus 7 3G tablet which was DOA from the box.
On opening the box I plugged in the charger for a few hours whilst I took care of a few things.
When I got round to starting it up the tablet just wanted to cycle through a series of screens, as if it were in a looped cycle.
The screens consisted of full covered col our that looped from red to blue, to green and so on.
Also it then looped over screens of full patterns like black & white checkers and rainbow stripes.
Anyways it wouldn't proceed any further from there and was diagnosed as DOA.A
As there were no more 3G stock in Mackay I decided on a WiFi model... So far so good...

OK I'm off to download Memory maps and get it cranking!

    Cheers Drew.

Excellent. Just setting up my Samsung tab 7 last night and look forward to what you put on it.

I'm now looking for a good mounting solution in front of the stereo as it fits in that space nicely.

I'm definitely learning as I go Andrew! But I have to agree with you, a good mounting option is on my list to get as well...

I currently have bungee cord strung between the top vanes of the vents either side of the stereo. I bought this case which when opened provides a way to hang the tablet like hanging a blanket on a clothesline.

It sags a bit from the weight of the tablet so it needs to be tightened up or use some non-stretchy material.

I bought a nexus 7 last week and have set it up with Androzic using the maps from my PC version of Hema.
Picked up a tablet mount that sticks using a very sticky suction cup which is designed to stick to the dash. Problem was it was still too high with the bottom sitting just above the top of the radio.
Its a Anygrip-TP01 made in Korea.
to get around this I knocked up out of poltcarbonate sheet a plate with a return on the base which slides into the gap at the top of the radio. At top of plate drilled a hole to take a cable tie. The cable tie connects to a piece of stainless TIG wire bent in half then bent at end so the two ends go down into the demister vent and hook under the centre vent strip. made so hooks from both sides.
Tighten up cable tie and the plastic plate is held pretty tight.
Now just stuck dash mount onto the plate and tablet sits just in front of the radio.

I picked mine up on gumtree but this is same mount.

Sorry about crappy photos. will post up pics of each part when I get back from Shark Bay.

My nexus is mounted using Velcro as per the pictures in thread linked below. Looks very neat with the tablet removed and doesn't fall off when mounted.

I found this guy with topo maps
              http://maps.festy.org/downloads/ozi/

I need some for SA. Anyone got some?
I've got Androzic installed now so would like some maps to test it out.

I also found this wiki with info for offline OpenStreetMap. Haven't had a good read yet.

                amts,

I have been able to export openstreetmap to oziexplorer format using maperitive: http://maperitive.net/

It's not the most user-friendly software, but it does work once you get the hang of it.

You should be able to get the Geoscience Australia 1:250k data for all of Australia pretty cheaply or free (it's a free for private use resource) I have a copy bought on DVD from D&L Software (Oziexplorer developers, it's on their webpage)

The SA Lands 1:50k mapping is not free, copyrighted, and is shamefully expensive considering it was paid for by taxpayer funds.

Tested out the polycarb plate and dash mount for my nexus on Saturday. Did a 120km return trip from Denham to the tip of Cape Peron. Sand 90% of the way with heavy corrugations and patches ( 1km long ) of realy soft sand. The tablet stayed put and GPS software worked really wel showing our progress.
The 250k maps (OZ2F) that I copied across from my Hema Map set worked ok but really lacked any detail.
Also downloaded Google maps and used them offline but again the detail wasnt much use.

One problem I did come across was charging the Nexus in the car. I was using a "Laser" brand 2 amp usb charger but it didnt seem to want to charge the tablet. Ended up charging it using the 240 ac charger a a small inverter. has anyone else had this problem.
As far as a music source it worked really well on the 2000Km round trip. Just used the standard music player app and a Belkin Tunecast FM transmitter.

                      Hey sparksy.
I havent even had mine in the car yet so i cant comment on charging.
At least to inverter got you sorted!
These maps that you thought lacked detail... What maps do you think you will go for?
I downloaded a free 10 day trisl map from the digital map shop, but im not sure if they are goo enough to Would you recommend the free google maps or is a waste of time?

                        Hi mackayvx
The google offline maps dont show any track detail or topography so really arent much use.
The Hema 250k OZF2 maps that came with Hema 4WD map CD show the main tracks and as far as the trip we did up to Cape Peron they gave us a general indication of where we were but again have no great detail.
So as far as using Androzic and the fact that it uses only OZF2 maps and I havent been able to source any 50K maps easily I think I may just buy Oziexplorer for android so I can use ECW maps and give that a go. The other ECM 250K maps that are supplied with Hema 4WD map collection seem to have a lot more detail and when I used them on my old CE based GPS they were helpful but the screen was only a 4" .
So i think toworrow I will download OZI for adroid and load up all the remaining maps I have from the disc and give it a go. I dont think the old licence for OZIexplorer CE will work but for $25 for new one it will still be cheap.
As far as the GPS tracking and finding my position when powered up it was very quick. Only thing is I will have to get a screen protector on it as the nexus screen is very reflective and hard to see in bright light.

I thought that Androzic could read Ozi maps?

It can, sort of. It can read the old OZF2 files. It can't read the newer OFZ3 or OZF4 files which have been encrypted differently. Unfortunately HEMA is releasing all their maps in the newer formats as they get updated and then they won't work with Androzic.
