We got a Garmin Nuvi 250W for $499 about 2 months ago. I have ALWAYS been opposed to getting a GPS as I am very good at reading maps. But now I'm glad we have one, they do have their place. Ours doesn't have any bells and whistles either, but it can tell me what I want to know, like where the bank and the shops are

      Hi,

We bought the Magellen eXplorist XL.
Big colour screen and Aus Topo mapping.

Cost a pretty penny but as we were planning an across country trip taking in some tracks on our own we got one with the words "the best you can get" ringing in our ears.
      $900ish.
Not a talking street directory, but every conceivable track, water hole and emergency contact to just name a few of in built points of interests.
Had it about 2 years now i guess, got tracks and routes from our trips from perth to Monkey Mia, Pemberton, sydney, adelaide, bathurst, camerons corner, innaminka, flinders ranges, port lincoln etc. Its been good.
But allways use it with paper maps and allways cross referencing in remote areas. just to be sure.

        Garmin Map60Cx.
        Cost around $690 I think.
I uise it for bushwalking, boating and 4x4ing so I needed a portable, mapping GPS.
Its loaded with City navigator which we use lots on trips to the big island.

I, too, bought the Magellan Explorist XL about a year ago. With Mapsend Lite one can easily pre-program POI's. There is a new software package that provides a measure of turn by turn directions by means of a beep and a note the screen such as "Turn Left".

For me, the unit comes into its own off-road. The accuracy of the topo maps is superb. We got back last week from travelling throught the Deua national park via the Merricumbene fire track. Before we left I could see the gradient of each of the major ascents and descents. Now that we're back, we have replayed the trip (in real time) on the computer screen from the saved log.

Finally, the track log feature measures your speed. If you happened to be booked for speeding, and wanted to challenge it, it would be useful.

P.s. I do not have anything to do with the company.

PPS. The unit was designed to work with Microsoft XP. There are real issues running it on Vista.

          Nuge.

Garmin 76cx for $440 before maps. I have downloaded a free topo map which is surprisingly good but will buy city navigator and probably licensed topo when $$ allow.

I can't recall exactly, but the Explorist XL cost me about $1,100 from Paddy Palin in Melbourne. It came as a package with the Explore Oz Topo maps for all of Australia.

I bought the Explore Oz street by street maps about 3 months ago. Again, I can't recall exactly, but the additional maps were about $250.00

                  Bad Investment

                  Here's my story.......

My wife bought a 2nd hand pocket pc on ebay which had TomTom installed (about $200 from memory). She then looked further into it and realised that it only worked if you had a GPS receiver, so she bought one of those as well on eBay (another $120 I think it was).

Then of course, the bloody machine crashed and when I got the TomTom program running again it required activation, but with no packaging or product numbers this became a real drama. I have got it sort of working again but the program (a questionable copy!) is very volatile and prone to crashing.

In hindsight I would probably just buy a brand new GPS unit from a reputable store next time. ops:

P.S. I also have a little Garmin eTrex handheld unit which I purchased new for $160 (yes on eBay) and this has been great - very handy for bushwalking etc.

My GPS (Global Positioning Substitute) is called Bek. Turn by turn instructions, in a slightly nasal whining tone, reinforced by blows to the side of the head if I disagree.

No wires, no battery, and no special software ... hand her a map, she looks at it and tells me where to go.

Want to breadcrumb a trail ... she throws stuff out the window ... my stuff ! :x

As for the cost ... try 20 years of pain, suffering and misery .. a typical marriage

                        Cheers
