Can someone please explain the difference between this and the hema maps app? I know you can do more with this one above but its also cheaper...?

From reading, it is cheaper because you don't download the maps in one go. You download what you need - and Apple being Apple, the only devices that have GPS are those 3G/LTE products (WiFi has no GPS capacity).

From what I have read it only has the main maps not the detailed maps that come with the first map app. It has a range of nice features such as attaching photos and uploading to Facebook etc thats if you want people to know what you are doing in the bush. This will only work if you have 3G coverage.

You can get a wifi only iPad to work with the Hema maps by adding a Bad Elf GPS device, this plugs into the side of the iPad and gives you a very good GPS service.

So other than not getting all of the maps in one go, and the online features of POI/geotagged pics/etc, what's different? Do you lose anything over the expensive one? The ability to purchase a couple of maps for $13 each, is pretty cheap for the function!

I've got the full version, but don't know if this would replace it. Anyone used this yet?

Well, I've just resigned from my work and will have to surrender my iPad, otherwise this would be a Chrissy gift to me.

Hema just sent an email to me. They've put together a really good page explaining the difference between the two:

Hi All. I bought the Hema App after Xmas for $49.95 and wasn't till I tried to install it that it told me it can not be downloaded over WIFI. Need to have 3or4 G coverage to download maps. My tablet didn't have this just wifi so off to Harvey Normans and ended up with a Samsung 10.1 with 3G and Wifi and GPS. Rush Home install it and watched a heaps of you tube videos on how good and what it does and the android app is no where in comparison on the iphone app. So back tot he Ozi I went and must say its a way better product as no internet is required gps.

Unless I have not found all functions of Hema I must say its a let down with all the hype that has been created.
                  Regards

So are you comparing the Hema Explorer App on the Android versus the ipad version of the same thing as the Hema 4WD maps product in the ipad doesn't exist on Android?
