  • DDX7039 integration with Garmin MAP60CS

Howdy all, just installed the Kenwood DDX7039 with touch screen...... I notice is has an AV Input for a PC or the like..

Rather than buy the Kenwood GPS unit, I was thinking of hooking the Garmin handheld up to it - but am not sure if it can output AV??? Anyone know this??

Also, City Navigator... is it worth the outlay? Point to point would be good.... and the bigger screen on the DDX7039 would avoid me having to buy an in car solution... as I do use it hiking / kayaking etc.

    Thanks for any advice!

    Nick.

Gday Nick, the 60 cs definately doesnt have AV out, only serial NMEA data. the round pin that is the power plug is also for data in and out, this is serial data which outputs as an NMEA string. Another option I guess is data could be inputed into a PC via its com port from the 60cs to run Oziexplorer or the like, then once into the computer you could output AV into the Kenwood deck and view the map on your deck ? Not sure if anyone has any other ideas. The Kenwood GPS would be the neatest way I would think though.

I looked at this option as I had a Garmin V at the time........I could not find a simple way to make it work. Much simpler to buy an integrated unit....and sell the old unit on Ebay

Just for your info, the Kenwood GPS unit is just a rebadged Garmin GVN52 unit.

Howdy all, about to purchase the City Navigator... but one more question.... Has anyone used the OziExplorer with the MAP60?? If so, is this a better thing to buy if I do not really care about using the GPS for the auto guidance thing??? Mainly want it for offroad tracks...

        Thanks

          Hi Nick,

I have spoken with Brian from GPSOz and he tells me that I can load OzTopo as well as City Naviogator on the same SD Card and I just get a choice on start up as to which one loads.
I will be exploring this option further next week,,,,,,if you want to wait and see how it goes with my 6039?

These maps were created by a technically gifted Geocacher and are basically a conversion of the GeoScience Australia Topographical map data into a Garmin format. I know this is an over simplification ... but have a look at the blurb on the link provided for a bit more detail.

The maps were constructed primarilly for outdoor activities, like geocaching, rather than vehicular navigation.

Have a look HERE ..... download the set and have a look. If I read it right they are free for non-commercial use.

I know when we are out and about, on tracks, its nice to have the occasional reference to a road name pop up, so we can cross reference our position with our paper maps. I've never used ShonkyMaps in the wild so I don't know if they will do what you want them to ... but go ahead and have a look. 8)

              Cheers

I bought a 76cx late last year and to date the Shonky maps set is the only one loaded. It works awesome for something that is free. On our recent Hoffman mill trip some of the other guys had track names while I had just track marked. I also once had no track in the area but only once the whole weekend. Basically, it really is good for something free and it's had no viruses or anything dodgey but if I had paid the $230 for the OZTOPO I probably would have been a little disappointed.
