  • Need some GPS Advice

okay guys i need some GPS Advice, i have a tomtom 720, it's pretty sweet, pretty useless for off road use? i don't think i can get topo maps for it, please tell me i'm wrong.

it does give me co-ords but, so i thought sweet, TomTom co-ords + 1: 25,000 paper map, happy days...well, not so, the paper maps are way to big for practical use while driving IMO, the scales arn't there if you fold the map, gets real awkward, really quickly....

so i've been looking the OziExplorer thing on a laptop but just need some answers, would that work with the USB GPS recivers you can purchase off ebay, or bettter yet, with my TomTom? can i purchase 1:25,000 Digital Topo maps?

Sorry if this is lame stuff, but i need real people to point me in the right direction.

    Cheers

as long as the GPS device has an output port then you can hook it up to a laptop (or PDA) running Oziexplorer. No idea if a Tom Tom has that, or if you can load topo maps. There's a few GPS orientated sites that you couldask that question at. You can get GPS mouses pretty cheap but do you want to use the GPS away from the car (as a stand-alone unit) for bush-walking, geocaching, fishing etc? Might be better to get a handheld if that's the case. The maps are obtainable.

    Cheers, Nige

In short the Tom Tom 720 is a dedicated Tom Tom unit and as such it would not be possible to run toppies off of it. It is designed strictly as a satnav unit to use Sensis maps.

If you really want to get the best available knowledge on GPS systems for your needs then I would direct you to the following forum as it has many people who are very knowledgeable on the subject who post there:

I'm currently running Oziexplorer on my tablet PC (Basically a PC with XP & a touch screen)

The best place I have found for map info is here...

          http://www.gpsaustralia.net/forums/index.php?

You may need to be a member to see the info you want, but its free & painless.

Note that there are some NSW maps you may be after that are free for non commericial use, just a small charge for the DVD & post. Check out the online shop.

If in doubt post a question back here....or there....

          Cheers

I know you've already got a tomtom, but if you're looking for an " all in one unit" i can recommend a HP ipaq rx5965.
It's got Tomtom built in,plus wireless and the usual PDA apps.
i've added Oziexplorer with NSW 25k topo maps , it works great.
I've also added Memory Map. It's got all the Hema maps including the Desert map series. A very good product.
            All for less than $900
Food for thought if your thinking of upgrading
