  • GPS/HEMA/iPad

    G'day PPr's,
I am planning a trip to remote areas and would like to hear from anyone who has recently completed an outback trip using the iPad/Hema combination. How does the v18 Toyota Prado on board system go in the outback and does Tom Tom rate? We were recently travelling through the Victorian highlands and noted that Tom Tom does not provide adequate coverage off the beaten track. Any feedback would be appreciated.
    Cheers
    Simon

Memory map with Hema maps on Android tablet worked well for us in the highlands,
    Greg - 08 D4D Prado,
Some trips done - Cape York, Fraser Island, Simpson Desert / Central Aust, Vic High Country.

If your planning to go remote then hema maps on either device is an invaluable resource. I wouldn't go remote without it. You could rely on the on board or tom tom for some of the trip but they are severely lacking when the bitumen ends. Pretty well covers all of the major and a fair few of the minor tracks in Australia . Just the high country has 6 maps dedicated to it. Even when your on a track that isn't shown your position is shown so you tend to be able to work out where you are and where you need to go. Always carry paper maps as well for the area your heading into, they both complement each other and then you always have a backup. Also good for sitting round camp planning where your going then adding the waypoints to the ipad/hema/tablet. Good luck in your travels

The road less travelled is definitely the best road to be on

My new Garmin 2797LMT seems great so far. Just spent the long weekend out in the Kanangra-Boyd National Park and all the fire trails were listed in the maps. The GPS tracked well the whole time. I am not sure if Vic Highlands are all covered. Any track in particular? I am happy to check what is on the Garmin maps for you. I'd hope things like the Blue Rag track will be on it, but let me know which tracks/trails andI can check it out if you are interested.

I use an ipad with MotionX - its free, maps are good but probably not as good as hema, and need to be pre-downloaded for where you are going. It records quite a bit of data about your trip.

I would like to buy a hema app, but havent found the justification mainly because of the cost. that and im not sure which of the two i really want, and i havent found anywhere that has both on display to make a comparison.

Hema on my iPad is one of the best things I have ever bought, I have no hesitation about going remote with it. It certainly cover the Vic high country pretty comprehensively. Outback areas that we travelled through last year in the Gibson Desert area were also well covered.

You can buy area specific maps if you need more than the standard pack, but the standard pack is pretty comprehensive.

            Cheers Andrew

Mud maps on ipad (since the 4 new high country maps) is really good for high country & covers just about anywhere through a lot of different included maps.
Hema is good for popular areas & touring, but often doesn't have more smaller tracks. Nor does it have much in many areas, ; eg; it's got nothing but a few dirt roads in the WOMBAT state Forrest in Vic.
Memory map is great for free & covers a lot of the high country, & other places, Like Fraser Island.

I have both the Mud Map apps, don't waste your money, they are so far behind the Hema it's not funny, especially if in remote country.

I find the opposite, but AJ has done a lot more travelling than me.
Hema is very colourful. Good for touring.
I only have mud maps, because the amount of times I have seen ppl with nothing in their hema, I wouldn't waste the $$$ on it especially when you get most of what's on hema free on memory map.

                    Hi Andrew,

So which do you have Hema 4WD maps or Hema Explorer?

                    Thanks

Great question. I can't find much info on the difference between the two (HEMA 4WD maps VS HEMA Expolrer). Which one is the best app to buy? We're heading from Brissy to Alice / Uluru. Will I need additional specific maps to travel across on the Plenty, then returning down through Coober Peedy and East to Dubbo. Cheers!

I have the Hema 4wd maps app, that was the only one available when I bought it.

Matt, the 4wd app should be ample to cover your trip.

I gather the explorer app is more for camp spots and other places of interest rather than navigation, but I haven't got that app so only basing that on what I've read. For $50 I'll probably grab that app as well, if it finds me a couple of good camp spots it's paid for itself.

                        Cheers Andrew

From what I understand the explorer app is more of an allrounder, only comes with a limited number of maps ( Australia topo 1:250k and 1:1million to start) and a limited number of downloadable areas to add to it. Also relies on an internet connection to use a lot of the features like there cloud server. Hema 4wd app comes with all there digital maps preloaded and is only dedicated to navigation so is the one you want I reckon. I think it pretty much has everything that there hn7 comes loaded with minus the street mapping and poi but don't quote me on that. No different than running their digital maps on oziexplorer just a lot more simplified. Mud maps has it's place as well if you already have the hema digital maps. I converted my collection to run on it to complement there maps before hemas app was available. Also easy to convert other digital maps to run on it as well. I run both now and will probably get there explorer app as well.

I've got the 4wd maps and the Explorer. Use the Explorer more. You can save sections of the Nokia maps for use off-road with no signal. It's good to have the satellite view sometimes. The POI's are great too. So many campsites to look at.

Thanks Andrew, appreciate the feedback. Looks like it may be worth purchasing both apps - $150 all up seems reasonable.
