  • GPS Receiver

My outlaws purchased me a iPad Mini for xmas to use specifically for navigation. I download the Hema App to see how that goes then realised that they had purchased a WIFI only model, not WIFI + cellular which are apparently the only model ipads which have GPS. To that end I have found that you can buy an GPS receiver that connects via bluetooth, these are pretty small and can be in car charged with some having 8+ hrs battery time.

Has anyone used one of these receivers?? If so any info would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Nice present!
Yes, that is the way to get it to work, but note that not all GPS receivers work for some reason (I have an old one for example that I can't get to work...)

Look in this thread on the apple support site - about halfway there is a suggestion for specific brands that do work with the iPad.

I looked into these when I realised I had the same issue with my iPad 2. I ended up just using my iPhone. Not all GPS receivers work with apple devices so you have to use one on the approved list as DK says. Some tech reason I can't remember (prob in that discussion link).

I was looking at getting the bad elf plug in GPS (http://bad-elf.com/collections/plug-in-gps). A lot of pilots seem to use and rave about the Bad Elf PRO but I couldn't see why I would need 5 devices connected at once and having another 12v lead in my cabin. - but in the end couldn't justify the extra cost and put the money towards the HEMA maps on the iPhone

I have though about just using my phone, I have an iphone 6 so ok screen size, as I've already purchased HEMA 4wd I can transfer easy enough. I may hang out until I find a compatible one at a good price! Not sure....... Initially I was looking at the Dual XGPS 150. Things can never be easy haha.
