After spending last weekend out in the bush and only getting 4 satellites, while the other guys were getting 7, I decided to add an external antenna.
This one is a $3.99 cheapy off eBay (with $6.00 postage from Hong Kong) and has a right angle MMCX connector so it hides away nicely.
The unit sits securely on top of the snorkel and the cable is secured down the back of the snorkel until it dives across into the join of the body panels. It then passes through into the wiper motor plenum, out into the engine bay, back through the firewall and into the cab, under the dash. It then sneaks through the dash and pops out directly bellow the ash tray ... where it then connects to the top of the Navlink.

Street navigation.

9 satellites ... I don't think I've ever seen 9 satellites before.

OziExplorer loading.

Even Ozi says 9 is a great number.

Hiya Steve
I've got the Geoscience 1:250000 maps and I've got a set of the MapTrax 1:100000 WA maps. Both lack the detail I want ... and the MapTrax stuff is about 100 years old.
Put it this way ... there is no Mandurah Bypass Road on the MapTrax maps
Here's a pic of our track route from last weekend ..... it does waypoints and track logging beautifully .... but the maps lack the detail I want.

Cheers

Steve
I found Image to OZF struggled with large files so I had to chop them up into smaller pieces.

Last time I tried it .... bloody thing chunked away for a day and a half ... and came up with a blank page for a map.
I'm not sure of the size where it has a hissy fit ..... but it seemed to manage the top or bottom half of WA OK.
I reckon if you put together 6 or 8 chunks for the Oz map ..... and set them up in an OZFX3 index .... they would convert OK ... and would switch from map to map as you go.
Cheers

nice job chippy , everyone just make sure that the cover tube you use is fire quenching and reasonably heat proof. I have seen some of late that you can light with a match and it will burn like an oily rag. Another bit i got for a job has scrunk like heating a twistie pack in an oven.
Another place to run a GPS aerial is from the outside windscreen vent up a groove between the A pillar and the windscreen , up over the roof in a 6mm groove thats in the side of the plastic filler strip that runs all the way to the roof rails ( if fitted).
I found this track when pushing a length of RG58 coax for a CB down from the top , it came out in the windscreen vent. No holes need to be made .

Chippy,
Great find as I have mentioned. Just had one delivered today from ebay..
Any chance you can post a picture how you have mounted the unit without the GPC in the cradle, I am looking at possibilities for mounting.
Also how easy was the camera install. I have never done anything like this and wondering if its something any pleb can do or should I go see some one and get it done by a pro..
Thanks
Jason
