Hi all

Thanks to this forum, I became aware of Shonkymaps (a very inappropriate name!). I have a Garmin C510 Streetpilot in the Prado and a Garmin Vista C for geocaching.
I downloaded Shonkmaps and I also had Garmin's Mapsource software that came with one of my GPS's.
The net result is that I now have topo maps on both of my units FOR FREE!
Hats off to the guy who put all of the effort into creating Shonkymaps!
Everything went absolutely smoothly, not shonky at all.
I do wish that I had spent the extra on the Vista Cx that would have allowed me to plug in a micro SD card and then be able to store every Australian topo map. As it is, I only have 24Mb internal memory and that stores the east coast from Cooktown to Sydney. No real problem as, when I travel, I will just install the maps I need.
I installed an SD card into the C510 Streetpilot. Now, if I travel to The Cape, the roads don't stop at Cooktown!
I am soooo happy! :lol: :lol: :lol:

Another handy one is Contours v2.0. Free 10 metre contour lines - you just have to join up and download for free 8)

Also, don't forget OpenStreetmap.

This is a community project, a bit like wikipedia for mapping. Anything can be mapped and a lot of major cities around the planet are pretty well mapped already. If you track your drives and upload them to openstreetmap, you can then trace the GPS plots to lay out the roads, intersections, lakes and other points of interest. Once done, it is freely available to anyone who is interested.

Garmin downloads are HERE I notice that there are links to both Contours Australia (as mentioned above) and Stevez's alternative Garmin downloads on that link.

Basically, I map just about anywhere I go these days, it's not hard and it is a great way of giving something back.

Link to Mount Ive Area (Virgin mapping area) Scroll the map northwest to see lake Gairdner, and Lake Acraman beyond (no, I have not been there, but would love to. Lake Acraman is on private property. These lakes are traced from Yahoo sat images)

Can anyone please advise if these maps are compatible with the USB type GPS?

I have Ozi and HEMA but would like maps that are more detailed for WA

What kind of GPS is your USB type GPS?

Shonkymaps is built from Geoscience Australia 250k mapping data. There is an ongoing effort to get something similar happening for Magellan. Not sure about Hema or Ozi...

We can do the moving pointer on HEMA maps using Ozi but would like more detailed maps than what we can see with HEMA eg streets or tracks?

There's a thread over on gpsaustralia about Maps for Hema Navigator maybe that helps?
