Garmin uses their own non-windows OS.

Does anybody know if this means it is a Mac compatible unit.

Garmin has been working on being Mac compatible for some time

Note that this has nothing to do with the OS on the GPS though.

The Mac software seems to work ok, there has been regular updates too.

Just had a look on the Garmin web site it all seems ok I think it will be a toss up between nuvi 765 & nuvi 5000

Does the 760 come with the mapsource software? or do you have to buy that separately? Can you use the free maps such as shonky maps without the garmin mapsource software? Thanks.

The 760 does not come with mapsource software and if you want to use Shonky maps / Tracks4Oz etc then you will need mapsource software.

Garmin Nuvi & Garmin TOPO Australia

I've entered the GPS world and bought a Garmin Nuvi 500 mainly because its waterproof and can be used between the car and out walking.

It was a good compromise to having an in car unit and a hand held for bushwalks.

All the information from others on this thread was very handy.

I bought the Garmin TOPO Australia map package on DVD and a blank micro SD card.

The DVD includes BaseCamp, a Garmin software product, that you run on a PC for doing waypoints, route and track planning on the PC before downloading to the GPS unit.

By getting the TOPO maps on DVD instead of the preloaded microSD the maps can be stored on the PC as well so if the card goes u/s you can just make another one.

Instructions for loading the TOPO maps from the PC to the SD card are non existant and its done using a Garmin product called MapInstall that comes on the DVD.

MapInstall and BaseCamp load onto the PC as programs into a default (no choice) program folder named Garmin.
Once the DVD installs you need to open the programs by the long method of Start - Programs - Garmin - then select which one you want.

In MapInstall when the program opens it asks where you want to install the maps, you need to already know the path to your SD card (F: drive, or G: drive, whichever it got allocated to). Once you've selected the right location you move to a screen that shows a map of Australia divided into small rectangles.

A hint here. You are clicking on these to select individual TOPO maps to instal and if you click on one map and hold the mouse button down then move the mouse you can select large sections (multiple maps). I did this a couple of times to select all the maps and then clicked Instal. It took about 20 mintues for them to transfer to the microSD but they are all loaded. The microSd is then just put into the Nuvi500 next to the battery.

A big hint for Base Camp. There are no instructions on the DVD. When you first open BaseCamp, it's worth clicking on Help and checking for Updates first, then after any updates are loaded, go back to Help and you can get full Instructions for use there. There is no manual or instructions on the Garmin web site!

For all the Nuvi's, you can get Manuals online on the Garmin website. It's worth downloading one for your unit as there are shortcuts for using the touch screens you might not otherwise discover.

I hope some of this helps. The best thing for me was that my home address wasn't recognised using the standard Navigator maps that came preloaded on the Nuvi but with the TOPO installed it locates my road by name and my house by number.

You can purchase from GPS Oz In Monavale NSW a OZtopo mapping disc which is preloaded with topo mapping and tracks which works with Garmin PND GPS units.
it works Great, been using it for 3 years.

Fungi, and all others looking at the Garmin Nuvi 760...

I unfortunately know nothing about Ozi Maps or the various products available to you. In NZ we pretty much have some purchase-able and a couple of free maps that work on the Garmin. I agree with LiveFreeAndRoam that yes there is quite a number of "clicks" to switch between these maps HOWEVER

I have found one solution that has made the purchase of the Garmin a no-brainer. Do you own a boat ? Do you ever go Surfcasting? Do you ever go fishing with someone else and there is no chart plotter/ navigational device? Do you surfcast and look at the ocean - not quite knowing what lies in front of you.

We'll the solution for me has been -- Garmin Blue Charts Pacific 2008 --

Yes you've read correctly. I have Nautical Charts loaded on my Nuvi 760. I originally phoned Garmin and they said that there was no way to load the maps - but there is. It works like a charm !!!

This may not be the answer you were looking for regarding Topos - but the processing power of the Nuvi has astounded me. The same versatility I believe will be available to you when looking at topos.

I was looking into getting BlueChart but Appleseed and Garmin said it only shows 2/3rds of detail. For example it doesn't show depth. Can you confirm that you have full functionality of BlueChart (I would be getting Garmin BlueChart Pacific v9 using map MPC021R for the top end NT) because it would save me a lot of money. Also for you or anyone else (haven't searched) can I load hema maps onto the 760. Already have shonky loaded
