  • DVD playback on the Sat Nav screen

    Hi

I was wondering if anyone has fitted or can recommend a unit that allows composite video to be played back on the factory sat nav screen.

The ideal setup would to be able to watch video from a video ipod, DVD player, Tv tuner or reversing camera.

An interesting site that may apply to Nav screens in Aus is

    http://www.coastaletech.com/LOCKPICK_MAIN.htm

I have seen a number of units available for US model Toyota's and wondered if anyone has tried these units in Aus?

You'll need this unit from that site to suit the AUst one, but I would check with them first.

even can let kids watch dvd in back with headphones and listen to ipod at same time
the ipod sits in glovebox and charges

Very interesting question - I am trying to get a switch fitted to my reversing camera allowing me to switch it on at will.

There is a guy on the LCOOL forum who has done it and has supplied me with directions on how to go about it

The next step is to ask my installer for a way to show DVD's on the screen - in theory it should work, but at the moment, I'm buggered if I know how.

I'm sure there are others dying to know how as well...

Well heres the answer on the lockpick.

Thank you for your interest in our products! However we do not support versions other than the US version at this time nor do we ship internationally.

Please let me know if I may assist you further : )

I would still suspect that it would probably work on an AU model, its just a matter of having one shipped which isnt hard just need to know someone in the US!

Having the factory reverse camera come on is simple, just a matter of feeding it the signal that it gets when it goes into reverse. Its Either a Positive or a Negative feed, so just supply it that from your switch.

My installer says it can't be done, but I don't think he knows about this new-fangled lockpick thang...

Finally got the reverse camera switch happening!

Very handy to check out tailgaters - also, the kids love watching it while we drive on the freeway.

Now, the next project is to achieve DVD playback on the satnav screen...

Gday Grandeman. Just wondering did you get your sat nav to show dvd's etc.? I've just bought a rear camera and waiting for it to arrive but wondering if its not too expensive to hook up a dvd like you were talking about.

                  Update..
I've been doing some searching around and have found this http://www.converters.tv/products/pal_to_rgb/236.html and have sent an email to see if it will work with our oem sat nav units. Will keep you posted when I get a reply. 8) Unless someone can contribute some other working option.

                    G'day Justo

No luck on my side - kept running into brick walls, so I let it slide for a while.

Hopefully something workable will show up, 'cause I think it would be a neat mod to have...

Thanks for the reply Grandeman. Well... you know the best thing about hittin your head against a brick wall..?? It feels good when you stop.!! hehe.
As for the DVD input situation, I've spent coupla hours reading through other forums and searching around and I'm sure it can be done. I've found a couple of units in the US that will do it for Toyota/Lexus nav systems. I just need to verify it will work for our prado system.
However I wouldnt expect to see any change out of $300-400.! And on top of that most of the units need a seperate audio input device. Which could be either another similar input device or a FM transmitter. I will keep researching though.

The other option is if we get a few of us that want the same thing we might be able to squeze the cost down abit.!!

Yeah, it's the separate input that makes it hard. Gotta watch the quality of some of these FM modulators.

Also, some of the yank stuff, while cutting edge, comes to Oz unsupported.

Anyway, I'm sure that there will be a few of us interested if something worthwhile comes up - maybe some kind of group buy could be the go.

There is a bit of info already on this forum about these devices and links to the manufacturers.

You can also get devices locally inAustralia to allow the Screen to be used for playback. A company in Vic does them. (Stereo and alarm wholesaler to the industry).

Thanks Team Piggy. Would that be Freeway Car Audio.? I contacted them about the reverse camera, didn't even think of asking about the DVD playback.!
I noticed the Lockpick link you left on this thread also. If these units would work on ours, I can arrange to get them through a mate in the US. I guess it comes back to the problem of not being covered by their warranty here in Oz though.!
