The new SPOT will be out in time for SEMA (the premier automotive specialty products trade event in the world) this November 3-6, 2009.

Just be mindful with the newest released/smaller version:
-AAA lithiums are not the easiest to find when out and about, carry spares...several
-the amount of time the smaller version can run is quite significantly less than the larger Spot
These two points are more critical in my opinion depending on where you plan to travel. If you are going to the back of woop I would go with the larger version.
These are just my own personal views of course

FYI, the SPOT messenger has a special on at the moment. $229 for the V1 model with a $25 rebate until 31/12/09. The offer includes 12 months free tracking so for $204 plus US$115 for the basic service, you have absolute peace of mind. Merry Christmas from Pearlie to me....
Try breaking down somewhere and you realize this is peanuts to pay when it could mean your survival, indeed your life.
Good point about the V2 batteries mentioned.
You're here for a good time, not a long time... Love my Prado...
Okay I have been using my SPOT for over 12 months now so here are some things worth mentioning:
1. Always send an OKAY message before starting your tracking sesion, this can take some time depending on how long it has been since you last used your SPOT. I also always end my tracking session by sending an OKAY message.
2. My SPOT progressively dropped more packets over the last 2 months and it seems that it was related to the battery strength. I replaced the batteries just recently and I only experienced one dropped packet whilst in tracking mode. So the simple solution is to place a sticker on the back of the SPOT when you install new batteries and write the date on it when they should be replaced, change them about every 8 months. My original battery was in for 12 months but clearly it should have been replaced about 4 months ago.
