  • What happened to the Polaris threads ???

s Your probably all wondering what happened to the threads on winCE editor and also the long running Polaris head unit thread.

They have both been removed to a holding area tonight as we have now been legally approached by the manufacturer / representative seller of these products in regards to posts and suggestion of PM (private messages) for hacking and software piracy info.

The thread has been removed as there was a large number of posts in regards to the illegal activities. Hacking / copyright breach / piracy.
These are all non conformist to the rules of this forum!

The manufacturer has name/ address information pertaining to some people, because they were silly enough to return their units for repair or software upgrade with pirated software in them still!!! (duh!) ops: They also have a bit of information stemming from posts on this site.

As a result of the possible legal action the following users have now been banned permanantly:

    Joe / Captain / Screech / Kspec.

A number of you have also received bans varying from one month to longer for your participation in this matter. A number of others have also received warnings.
I think that thread now I have read all 16 pages sucked a lot of people into posting stuff they thought was Ok, but in reality it was crossing that copyright line.

How about everyone has a think about the POSSIBLE results down the track of our posting actions. Yes its hard to look into the future, but tonight has proven that it CAN and WILL come back to bite you.. THIS IS A PUBLIC FORUM! Remember this. If you dont know the rules, maybe it is time to go and have a read of them again, it takes less than 3 minutes.

I dont want to have to set everyones access to have to read the rules all over again before they can post.

Re: What happened to the Polaris threads ???

The only reason I purchased a Polaris unit was from the imformation I have read in the removed Polaris thread. I still rate it as A1 addition to my Prado. So I hope the manufacturer takes a light approach to the PP forum. And after a slight edit of the thread it can be posted back on here where it belongs.

Seriously bad form by some members and now ex members to jeapodise the forum. I only hope the owners of Polaris are appeased by the measures taken and will let the forum off the hook. THe Polaris is a good system and very good value and I am sure the forum has helped them sell many units so maybe they can appreciate that fact. We can only hope that they will.

I do agree Mav, as I purchased this fine unit because of the free advertising on PP. If it wasn't for this forum I would have purchased another brand. That is definate, and I am sure I speak for many in saying so.

Re: What happened to the Polaris threads ???

          Hi all,

This is a very interesting topic within itself, the whole copy write and piracy issue. I have a real stupid question running in the back of my mind that I would like cleared up!

You have bought a unit ie "Polaris" from the manufacturer. You then go and buy ozexplorer software which you then proceed to tinker with to suit your needs and install it on your head unit. You haven't copied the software from another unit that is achieving this already and used it on the Polaris.

Correct me if I am wrong but "Polaris" at the moment don't have the software available on their head units to do what you all have proceeded and done. Therefore I would guess that you have beaten them in the development of the software to do this.

Now accepted that it would void any warranty on the unit once modified, but how is it a breach of copy write when you have bought all the required software and head unit in this instance. How is doing this any different to doing any of the modifications we do to our Prado's, for example some one has already got a design for the majority of the drawer system some of the people hear have made, The rock sliders that have been made by one of the members are commercially available, so is that also a breach, etc, etc.

Does this also give the right to Polaris to go to other manufacturers and say to them "you are not allowed to develop this because we are"? because the way I understand it this is what is happening. Will the next thing be Toyota saying to us we can't modify our Prado's because they are working on a "Full off road version".

I don't see why they couldn't based on Polaris example.

Is there something that I have missed?

Now I don't have a Polaris head unit so this doesn't effect me either way, but a very interesting side issue.

          Food for thought

Correct, loading your own licensed software e.g. OziExplorer on a Polaris or on any WinCE based GPS device would void warranty but not breach copyright. I didn't read the thread so I don't know specifics however there is most likely no EULA with the unit therefore once you pay your money you can do what you like with it.

But posting HOW to breach copyright and to crack the Polaris code IS ILLEGAL (and will get you banned ) :P

I would also (but not confirm) that yes' loading Ozi on an SD card and loading it up on your Polaris system, may not be illegal, but do not own one to say it is as easy as that and no code or hacking is needed. Maybe Polaris (who are members here too  can answer this?).
Yep, I would imagine warranty may be voided as well.

Loading of Ozi onto a SD card of larger capacity, and then cracking their code to allow it to run dual programs IS illegal.. And thanks to one silly member (or ex member) has dropped us all in it for returning their like that to the supplier...

What people do in thier own space is none of our business, but when it creates a legal issue for this forum it becomes an issue.

Basically, this forum WILL dissapear if legal avenues on such an item were ever pursued, so its something for everyone to have a think about every time they post something of dubious nature.

The admins & mods discuss things heavily in regards to this type of stuff, I know its nice to know your way around "things" but if it is going to kill the place it isnt quite as good a feeling.. We also hate having to spend hours every day sifting thru every post to make sure they comply..

              Cheers.

Based on what EULA? Once you buy the hardware you can do what you like with it. If this is the matter in contention, PM me and I'll be glad to help as I have access to piracy attorneys.

Re: What happened to the Polaris threads ???

I dont think we need to start pulling apart the decisions made by the Admins to comply with the legal entities of the product manufacturers. (And this is not open to discussion)!

I am sure they wouldnt come looking for a fight without having their facts "hell straight" and yes, I also threw it past my legal team, and they said, "get rid of the stuff that they want you to..."

So bottom line, it has happened, people have been banned or sent on a holiday. Lets move along.

If we get the time, and it still makes sense after we remove all the bad posts, the Polaris thread "may" return to the GPS area.
Dont hold your breath as its a big job to edit it all.
