    Re: RAM MOUNTS FOR GPS

motor bike head on, read the 7 hills trip report. Have a fantastic courtsey car though

I did see that, I assume the sump has just got a big dent in it? A hole would have been interesting...

      Re: RAM MOUNTS FOR GPS

Yeah, I think I would've noticed a hole, it was picked up by the mechanic when he went over it today. Still, if I didn't have the bash plate attached, it (the bike) would've done more damage. At least I remained driveable, more than what I can say for the bike. I am now though considering an aftermarket plate like the davis brown like the other lads have done that covers all that area.

But anyway, getting back to the RAM mounts...........

I have a thread somewhere about the proclip mount for my iphone, and I have bought the mounting bracket for the wifes Nuvi 330 for the Rav.
Thanks for the heads up mate, but I can't see a 'heavy-duty' suction cup mount on their site - just a screw-in one. The cradle does seem to supply power, so if I could get a RAM suction cup (they seem pretty sturdy) with a Pro Clip holder that would be just the ticket for me... The search continues...

Have a good look around the site...... They are a 2 part component design. You pick the custom bracket for your device (eithr phone, GPS, PDA or whatever), and then the custom attachment for your vehicle......... I don't believe any of them are designed to be screwed in. The beauty of these is they are a custom fit for your vehicle. I now have them in 3 vehicles, The Prado, wifes Rav and daughters Starlet......expensive though, but I really don't like drilling holes.

Is there a RAM Mount for the chinese made 7" GPS units like this

I don't really want it to fix onto the windscreen, having said that I can't work out where it could go, any ideas please?

INSTALL OF RAM MOUNTS DRIVERS SIDE PILLAR

(Edit 19/2/09) - WARNING - This requires removing and altering the "A" pillar trim. If you have air bags that deploy from the "A" pillar then you musn't attempt this mod.

                        Shopping List

4x 3/16 Nyloc Nuts (You will have already been supplied 4x 3/16 bolts with the kits, if not, you need these as well, about 15mm - 20mm in length.

sheet of felt, about 4mm - 5mm in thickness, you require enough to go underneath the ball joint. I used Feltrac Ultra from Bunnings, it should be where you by castors and other furniture feet.

The felt is required because the pillar is curved and the base of the ball joint is flat, the felt helps compensate for this to provide a sturdy support bewteen the two.

                        Tools

                        drill and drill bit (3/16)
                        pencil
                        scissors
marlin spike or similar to push holes through felt
                        phillips head screw driver
ring spanner (for use with 3/16 nuts)

                        Directions

Remove the ball mount from the rest of the arm assembly, you do this by unscrewing the thumb screw on top of the arm. You will need to use the ball mount for alignment purposes.

The area to install is towards the base of the drivers side pillar.

Place the ball joint on the area you wish to do the install and mark it appropriately with a pencil.

Where the grab bar is, you will find 2 blank covers concealing 2 phillips head screws, flip the blanks out with a small screw driver to reveal the screws.

Remove these 2 screws, these are the only fixtures actually holding the pillar cover in place, apart from some plastic tabs. Once the screws have been removed you can easliy pull the pillar cover away revealing the pillar itself.

Place your ball joint onto the felt, then trace around it and cut the circle of felt out with the scissors.

Putting the ball joint back onto your new circle of felt, mark out where you intend to put the screws with the pencil and then with a marlin spike or similar, push holes through the felt. Put the screws through the felt to make sure they fit through. I do not suggest you use a drill to put holes in the felt as it is likely to wrap onto the drill bit potentially causing injury to your fingers.

Align your ball joint on your plastic cover with the original marks you made and mark out where to drill. Note - there are plastic support blades where you wish to drill, you may have to angle your ball joint slightly to avoid these. Once you have made you marks, drill away.

Then you make a sandwich out of your items. Push the bolts through the ball joint, followed by the felt and the attach it to plastic pillar cover and then screw the nyloc nuts onto the end. You will need to use the ring spanner and phillips head. The felt will compress as you make it nice and tight. The plastic cover should not warp.

Re-install the plastic pillar cover complete with your newly attached ball joint.

Now re-attach your arm assembly, mount and gps unit and you're good to go

                          Looks good.

I personally would have probably looked at the RAM suction mounts though, this would allow fitment a bit further up towards the dash, meaning a place to rest your hand when using the GPS.
It also meant no drilling holes in the trim.

Re: RAM MOUNTS FOR GPS (INSTALLATION DETAILS NOW INCLUDED)

                            Hey TP, horses for courses I suppose. After 2 days of playing with this thing the below listed seem apparent;

                            Positives -

1 - Doesn't impair vision at all and being to the front slight right of the driver, you don't have to take your eyes off the road to view it properly. As it fits in snuggly to the pillar it also means that your all round frontal vision isn't affected, good for negotiating tight tracks. Being on an adjustable arm, I can move it out of the way anyhow.
2 - You don't have to take your hand off the steering wheel to use the GPS, you only have to extend your index finger. At the worst, you can rest your wrist on the end of the steering wheel anyway. Being adjustable, you can move it forwards or back depending on the users preferences.
3 - You don't have to lean forward out of your seat to use the thing.
4 - You can still get your windscreen foil on without having to remove the arm mount.

                            Negatives -

1 - Drill holes are left in the trim, bad for re-sale.
2 - If you want to run off vehicle power, you need to run a power cord from the centre console area up under the dash carpet if you have it and then ino the GPS, looks messy.
3 - Nearly the same as negative point #2, if you want to attach a laptop to the GPS then you either have to run another unsightly cable over the dash or remove the GPS from it's cradle altogether.
4 - Probably others will appear, but it will take time for them to develop.

                            Future Improvments -

Hook up a power socket next to the mount and run a modified power lead to overcome negative point #2. I am also considering how I'm going to run an in dash USB connector to overcome negative point #3. As for negative #1, this is a long term vehicle project for me so it's going to be a while before this becomes an issue, so I'll worry about it then.
