  • Magellan Triton 1500

I've recently upgraded to a Magellan Triton 1500. The traveller pack came with the unit, cradle, 12v cable, PC cable, pouch and has Aus Topo on 2mb sd card. I have base map of Australia and a separate map for each state. Cost was around $1100.

Be aware of cheap units sold via E-bay - they are preloaded with US base map and my local dealer warned that warranty issues could arise.

I didn't want a talking street navigator that seem to be very popular. I wanted a real GPS.

This unit shows all the inner city streets and suburbs and has all the streets of every town including those annoying little sidings along the major highways where you have to slow down as you pass through. They have POI including golf courses, hotels, campsites, etc. More than enough detail for my needs.

I have been surprised to see many minor tracks on the mapping, especially around the Goldfields and Great Southern areas of WA. The PC interface has allowed me to upgrade the software programme a couple of times already since purchase in October. There were a couple of glitches with these units when they first rolled out.

You can also download your maps onto PC and view tracks, waypoints and POI.

The touch screen generally works well but is a bit of a bugger to use whilst driving.

It has a built in MP3 palyer/voice recorder and light source. The 2000 comes with a in-built camera.

There's a way to upgrade and customise other maps. I leave this unit in the car and use a little Garmin E-trex when I jump out and head off on foot, usually when prospecting.

There's a bit of a problem with glare on the screen when you stick the cradle on the inside of the windscreen but this can easily be remedied with a thin plastic shroud or similar. I haven't had a problem with satellite reception and there doesn't appear to be a need for an external antenna.

Bugger Bali, get out and see Australia before we sell it all to China.
