Better quality maps?

Went for a bit of a drive up to Wilbinga on the weekend, it was nice and soft out on the beach (wasn’t it Sani?- shame there's no photos :wink: ), anyway it made me realise just how poor the Geoscience maps are I have loaded on the Navlink.

Where do you get decent maps from, are any of the Hema products any good? My old Magellan Meridian has most of the beach tracks north of Perth marked but the Geoscience maps are pretty scant when it comes to detail for that area.

The free GSA maps were not created or released for topo navigation. If you buy the high res versions they provide significantly more detail. With the government data, you get what you pay for and most government maps are heavily subsidized.

Depends on what you want to use your map for, if you want topo features for navigation, the best are the 1:25000 or 1:50000 scale, the 1:100 000 are OK if you know what you are doing but derived data such as contours, river lines and spot points carry a greater error.

Hema are a rebadged product, a similar version is more than likely available from your government mapping authority.

Hema 1:250k are much better on my 4.3" then the GA maps, downside is they take up a lot more room. They have all the marginal info scanned, and they must be at a higher resolution. They come up clearer and larger at the same zoom level.
