  • Hi Matt.

your PM box seems to be full...

That's OK, I'll post my first message on PP instead! Plus, I'm sure someone on here will be able to help...I recently bought a used Prado from Gympie in Queensland. The previous owner had installed a TP09X1 (I think), which is fantastic, not that I have worked out all the features especially with the nav system. Is there a good user manual that I could download somewhere?

Also I would like to add a reversing camera and an Ipod connector into the glovebox. Not having seen the unit before it went in, and not having the box or installation manuals, I guess I don't really know what to expect in the way of ports to plug cables into. Would somone have some advice please.

    Thank you.

    Regards.

    Jonathan.

    • You can only run one program and sat/nav at the same time, I bought a 7inch sat/nav from ebay with av/in which i will use for rearview, have also swapped camera on van for 90 deg view for decent rear view not reversing type.

      • Hi All,

Does anyone in Melbourne (Eastern Suburbs or SE Suburbs) have one of Matts TP09X1 GPS fitted with Ozi Explorer and IPOD?

If so, could you please contact me via PM

I would like to have a look at the unit and see it working before I Commit to purchasing one.

My other options are an ASUS Islate PC Tablet or an IPAD with Ozi Explorer and Mudmaps.

        • Hi Jonathan,
Matt is having trouble accessing the pp website. I have emailed the administrators and hopefully they can fix this for him soon. In the mean time, email him direct on [email protected] His after sales service is exceptional and he has helped me out quite a bit lately. The unit should of come with an ipod connection either in the glovebox or it's hidden in the back somewhere and you can purchase a camera from Matt. He has also recently sent me a PDF version of how to use the off road mapping software which is very user friendly. Ask him for this also and if you have any dramas PM me and i'll send this to you.

          Good luck

          • I am looking to get the AVN11TP, but would like to see it action first.

Any PP's in the Melbourne Western suburbs or city fringe with one on board that would care to show off its features?
Also did you self install or get it done by a pro?

            • I have had my unit for some time now and it works great. One question though - When I put a chip into the USB port for the IPOD songs will I get the same functions on the screen as I get with the IPOD itself. (I know - Give it a go and see what happens, but I haven't purchased the chip yet). Nobby

              • Nobby, there is a different interface for USB/SD card music than for the Ipod.

                • Thanks andoland, I have been away but I take it from your response that the small USB port on the front of the unit is unsuitable for a IPOD connection. At the moment we just plug it in the cigarette lighter and all works. Might keep doing this although it does tie up one power outlet. Thanks for the info. Nobby

                  • Nobby,

I just want to make sure we are talking the same thing. When you say 'put a chip in' do you mean a micro SD card or USB stick that you are going to copy music files to? I have the premium unit, so not sure how much it differs from yours, but if you put music on an SD card or USB stick there is an interface on the unit that allows you to play the songs from the SD card/USB. However, the ipod connects directly to the unit with the supplied ipod cable giving you full control of the ipod through the head unit, i.e. ability to select play lists, genres, etc. I dont think this functionality is available via SD card/USB stick (I stand to be corrected because I haven't tried it) because all you have then is a list of songs. You may be able to shuffle and repeat I imagine.

                    • Thanks. I have the cable from the back of the unit for the IPOD but it won't recharge the IPOD so I don't use it. The port that I am talking about is in the bottom right marked USB. Can I plug in a chip (or whatever they are called) to that and play music through the IPOD in the unit.

                      • Okay, I think I understand. Yes you can put music on a USB stick and plug it in here and play via the head unit. I actually have two USB cables that come from the back of my unit the same as the Ipod cable does so it would be best to plug your music USB into one of these if you have them. Otherwise you'll need an adaptor cable because the plug you are talking about at the bottom right wont directly accept a USB stick. The head unit does not actually have an ipod in it, but it will play songs in MP3 format BUT the format of the songs on your ipod and as they are stored in itunes will not work - you have to convert them to MP3 and I've never had to so that so can't give you any advice there.

                        • Many thanks, sounds all to complicated to me so I will stay with the cigarette lighter method. Nobby

                          • hi Nobby,
the unit should allready come withe the adapter cable that
enables you to connect a USB stick...i have loaded 800 mp3 songs
and plays them good...as for the ipod i do not use the ipod cable
that comes from the back...i have connected the ipod to the
auxilary cables (you can buy an adapter from dick smith) and
the sound is briliant (you still use the ipod controls)...
                            hope this helps...

                            • Well I finally got around to installing the unit into my 2005 GXL 120 late last week, before heading to Whyalla for the weekend. It was a good chance to test it out. I didn’t have time to install the reversing camera, which is a bugger, as it would have come in handy on the trip!

Firstly, does anyone have any idea what this plug is for? The unit works without it, and i cant find anything in the car loom like it. My guess would be steering wheel controls, but NFI why it would be on a separate plug.

Anyway, as everyone says the unit is very easy to install. Apart from tearing my hair out for half an hour trying to find the above plug in the car, i had it all in and finished in about an hour and half. Wish i had taken a bit longer, because i forgot to plug in my aircon controls! The fit is excellent.

The radio works well, it picks up all the major FM stations here in Adelaide, didn’t try AM, but I'm not likely to listen to AM.

Bluetooth for phone calls works well, if not a bit quiet. I tried to increase the volume in the system menu, but there was not enough adjustment. I can hear people fine, and i haven’t had any complaints about my end. The phone pairs quickly. I have an iPhone 4.

The GPS seems to work well. I have only used the street navi though. Although the voice is a bit quiet, but it improved slightly with adjustment. What is damn annoying though is it cuts the music out every time i press a button for a good 3 seconds. Also cutting the music (or dvd) when it speaks is a good idea, but shit its annoying in the suburbs, when the thing is talking every 30 seconds. Also takes a couple of seconds to cut out before it speaks, and then a couple of seconds to come back after it stops talking, so it makes for a frustrating drive, especially when I like the song playing!

Turn off the sound you say? Well that leads me to my next gripe. The screen. At night it is great, I can see it very clearly. During the day though, it is unreadable. The screen seems shiny, and reflects the sunlight something chronic, and i cant see the screen well enough to follow a map / gps. I have played around with the brightness with little effect.

Another gripe is the iPod interface. This is the main reason i bought the unit. I had hoped to be able to control the unit from the ipod/iphone, to make finding songs/playlists a breeze. No such luck, it locks out as soon as its connected. Also it wont play from where it stopped last time on the iphone/ipod. Each time i connect it it starts playing from the first song in alphabetical order. Infuriating on short trips. So i think I'l leave it connected but when i turn the car back on, it resets it from the beginning. This is made even more infuriating by the controls of the deck. Cycling through a list of songs takes ages, and is hard to do on the move. And 9 times out of 10 hitting the button for the playlists/artist list/etc (the green button in the centre) brings up this damned overlay which has basic track controls on it. Which means I have to click elsewhere to clear the overlay and try again. Often I have to do this 4 or 5 times just to get the green button to click.

Also I find that the connections drops out the iPhone regularly, which means I have to start the whole damn process over again. The connection seems stable with an older iPod nano I have, but I don’t want that in the car.

So I just use Bluetooth to play music, which doesn’t have the same clarity as the iPod cable, and chews the phone battery, but at least it is usable. I really wish the unit had an Aux in cable, I’d use that instead.

I also tried the USB connections with a USB stick. That seemed ok, however, sometimes I found that it reset the playlist when I turned the car off.

Something else which seems weird, is that songs don’t seem to play from the start. They seem to start at about the 2 or 3 second mark. Not frustrating just weird. It seems to do it with the USB, iPod/iPhone connection. Don’t think it happens with Bluetooth though. It does seem to do it with a music DVD I played, which might mean it will do it with a normal DVD, however I haven’t tested it.
My last issue is that when I first plugged the unit in, the buttons along the side illuminated differently. The Source button was visibly brighter, which the rest were dull. Now, only the Source button is illuminated. I will talk to Matt about it, since I think it is a problem with the unit. I also can’t find a way to change the button colour. I found the option in the system menu (I think) but it won’t change. The option is grey, instead of white, and the arrows won’t work.

So there I am. I’ll send Matt an email as well, and get his take on all of this, but I just wanted to see what others thought and if I am alone with my frustrations. It seems as though I am, from all the happy people in this thread. Overall, the unit seems a good idea, but its definitely not what I thought it would be.

Wow, sorry for the essay, I didnt mean to type so much!
                              Cheers, Damo

                              • hdtdamo5 is yours the TP09X1 or the premium unit?

I have the premium unit and don't have any of the problems you describe - the screen is easily readable in daylight, I find the ipod interface quite good and I can get all the playlists, etc (although one gripe is when you hit one of the menus the menu only stays up for a couple of seconds so you have to be quick), it starts playing songs from wherever it stopped last time.

The only problem I have is that the radio reception is woeful. I'm not sure if this is the unit itself or the in-window antenna so I am going to get an external antenna and try that.
