  • Garmin 1390 - Topo Maps Question

I've just purchased a Garmin 1390 and the Topo Australia maps. When displaying the maps on my computer using the Garmin Basecamp software they look great. When I load the maps on to the Garmin however, they don't seem to show nearly as much detail and some areas seem to show no detail at all. What's going on? Have I missed something?

    Re: Topo Australia Maps Question

If it's anything like my Magellan XL then they are vector maps build up in layers (unlike OziExplorer which uses calibrated image files) As you zoom in and out the layers available changes meaning the detail at the various zoom levels is different.

With my Magellan it doesn't seem to follow any sort of logical reasoning, I can be zoomed at 1km level and come to say a road junction... zoom in to get more detail say to 750m scale and one track will disappear off the map, go to 35m and it reappears.

Yet on the PC all the layers are merged so you get full detail at any zoom/scale.

Thanks Mick. Sounds like that is what is happening. Maybe it's a product of the low processing power of the GPS compared to a PC.

        I'd say you are correct.

It's annoying but you get used to it.
