Laptop/Netbook GPS

OK, so being too miserable to buy the Ram mount I decided to knock one up for the dash top.
Came up with this...mounts an Asus 10" Touch screen netbook / tablet.
Fixes onto dash with Velcro, little bit concerned with this, but I'll try out first and take it from there.
Have Trackranger for remote stuff, Garmin Mobile PC for normal auto - routing stuff and need to find some form of music storage stuff...and it cost stuff all.

Acer Iconia W501

just want to throw in my 2 cents. I recently bought the new ACER Iconia W501 Tablet. This unit runs Windows 7 with all the nornal features of Windows 7 so not a cut down version. The other great things are that this unit will power and run an external 2.5 inch hard drive so space for maps is not an issues. The only down side is that the unit does not come with an internal GPS unit so i use a Bluetooth GPS. So far this has wored a treat for me. The only place that i can find them in Australia id JB HiFi as they are very new to the market.

OziExplorer Topo Maps

Haven't had a chance to use it as yet.... But the Toshiba AT100 is one of the better spec tablets on the market and has a built in GPS along with a USB, Mini USB, HDMI and SD Card ports/slots.... Brilliant to use around the home and supposedly has a minimum battery life of 7 hours when in use and 12 when on stby.

Could be worth a look. Runs Android 3.0 and is upgradeable also. 16gb with WIFI.

Now I just have convince my daughter her epc has another use in the car

Got my bluetooth GPS of fleebat arrive today and finally paired it to the laptop
Have loaded memory maps and the Vic 25k topo's. Now I just need to head out and test it all out.
Will let you all know how it goes.

+1 , however, I have a Motorola XOOM. I was thinking of going down the netbook/laptop path for email/internet/oziexplorer/etc but with the android andapple tablets offering this functionality why would you bother? In my opinion its the best solution that one could use whilst on the road/ off the beaten track not to mention that it can be used from home as well. Paired with a RAM mount solution you can't go wrong.

I now have an Acer iconia A500 tablet and have managed to get the 1:50k topos of Vic free and running them on Androzic. Will get a field test sunday.
I'm waiting for the memory map Adroid ap to be released so I can use the 1:25k set we have. They have fantastic detail.

Update on previous posts. tried the laptop and it was too cumbersome in the car hence biting the bullet and the acer tablet.

Went to Tallarook on Sunday,

The tablet struggled to keep GPS signal under the trees once the cloud cover picked up.
Very disappointing. Not sure how to improve it as it does not yet support a bluetooth gps.
The iPad looks to have held GPS lock better, which was being used in the other car.

Surprised by that, my Asus will get satellites inside the house under a tiled roof. In the car I find most of the GPSs that I've used don't work as well if in the middle of the car rather than near the windscreen.
