Hi all you gadget and gizmo experts.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of a navigator and/or program that works well as a trip planner.

I have a new client where every couple of weeks I have to document between 20 and 50 locations around Brisbane. I have a list of approx 500 locations around/in BNE and I can choose the ones I shoot for my purposes.
What I would like to find is a desktop based program where I can choose my locations, enter them as POI's and get the program to suggest the best route or even options for the route.

The location information is usually a cross roads junction, not a number and address.
I run PC and Mac so either are fine.

I don't own any in-car navigation so would consider purchasing one so I could load the route for use on the road.

p.s. being an owner of an 'off road vehicle' off road mapping would be a nice feature too... ... but not critical.

I believe the Garmin brand is the only company that has auto-sort multiple destinations

I'm not sure if you can enter the destination on your desktop and then transfer it to your GPS.
I believe the cheapest current model that has this feature is the nuvi 765. Not sure about off road capabilities though.

I'm a Tomtom user for road based GPS and Oziexplorer for offroad.

Thanks Andrew... I'll have to have a look into that option as I did it today with paper maps and planning routes on the go. Not very efficient unfortunately.

The girl at JB Hi Fi said something about Tom Tom have an online service where you can plan a trip and then load it to the head unit. She doesn't think it does the auto sort though

I use a tom tom for work, and do similar to what you want, have the clients set as POI and set them up that way.

i hear good things about Garmin units and the streetpilot software though.

Is 'StreetPilot' the name of the units before the current Nuvi ones?
As far as I can tell the MapSource software is the computer software for Garmin. I have that from an old Garmin off road model I had. Probably just needs an update to work with a newer unit :?

Is that the Tom Tom 'Work' they talk about on the website? If not, what software does it use? The girl at JB Hi Fi couldn't tell me if it had any form of an 'Auto Sort' feature.

Oh, I'm also leaning towards the Garmin units based on the 'Life Time Maps' option.

One fee for up to 4 map updates a year for the life of the unit.
Sounds a whole lot better than the others at $150'ish per update... correct me if I'm wrong

That Whirlpool post is from 2006. I'm trying to find another Whirlpool post that talks about auto routing... ahh here it is. Took all day... http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-re ... ?t=1160796 (note: I'm lomond over at Whirlpool). that post also talks about a website that uses Google maps to do fastest auto routing of a bunch of addresses.

I use Tomtom on my PDA and WinMo6 smartphone. As far as I know, there is no auto routing feature on mine. You need to enter the addresses in order using the Itineraries feature. For me, I use Itineraries to save regular tourist routes. So when I get visitors and I can't take them for a tour around adelaide, I run say the Barossa tour and all they have to do is follow the GPS instructions from place to place.
