    Tom Tom One
Does anyone have one of these units and if so what are your thoughts?
Is there anything wrong or right with them, and is there a better one for the money?
    cheers

Can't help you with your question but am also very interested in the answers from this forum. The purchase of a GPS is something I want but am continually bewildered by the ever changing models and increased functionality they have. Do we really need photo records of the various locations?

In Feb 2006, there was a post that praised the tomtom GO 500 unit which back then was about $1000. Not sure what they are worth today. If they are anything like plasmas, they are probably half that price. Is the tomtom One today's equivalent of the tomtom GO 500?

I dont have the Tom Tom One specifically, but I have used the Tom Tom software inferface a lot. I have the Pocket PC version of the software which has the same icons and interface. I have also used the TomTom Go 910 and the added benefit with this device is the light sensor (and mp3 player). The light sensor enables the device to auto switch the skins to night mode when the light levels drop. A very handy feature that I wish my pocket pc version had!

I find that the Tom Tom software is very good, easy to use compared to a number of other GPS software around.

The tomtom One is basically the equivalent to the GO500 without the hands free car kit for your mobile phone.

Its much thinner as well and I think may even have a slightly bigger screen.

It does have a much better gps chip in it though and will get and hold sat lock much much better than the older models.

I have used many GPSr's over the years and after playing with a few in car sat nav units I still cant find one better than the tomtom.

Its ease of use etc is great.

You wont go wrong getting one at all.

Or get the software addition for your tomtom and it changes automatically at dusk and dawn based on the time recieved from the satellites.

            Thanks Embi. Well put.

The most confusing bit about buying one of these units is getting someone to give a plain language explanation of what the major differences are.

            Cheers

                That's just it - I don't know what I need to ask .... but I'll try.

Most of it's life the Prado is my daily driver and I would like a unit that has a decent city map and I can plug in an address and it tells me how to get there.

Once or twice a month we get to go and visit some un-tarmac'd countryside and I would like to be able to use published trek notes, mag articles etc, and accurately follow the instructions.

Each school holidays we want to be able to hook up the CT and bugger off - same deal with the trek notes. There are heaps of mags out now with great articles on places I would like to go and see - all with GPS coordinates.

In three weeks we are heading off for our third trip across / around Oz - and it certainly won't be the last and it would be nice to be able to plug in a street name in Darwin, Brissy or Canberra and be able to find where I'm going.

All of this in a unit that I can unplug and chuck in my pocket - before some lowlife does it for me.

Now, when I go into Hardly Normal and give this speech all I get is blank looks. Is there such an animal or am I asking for too much from a single unit ?

                How's that for a start ?

                Cheers

In the cities the tomtom is fantastic. Rarely it can have mapping errors but thats because Sensis (the mapping people) have put them in wrong. It may be that a roundabout was planned for that intersection so it says go around it but it doesnt exsist. Its not a biggy and hardly ever effects the navigation. If you miss a turn it recalculates your route in an instant.

I have been suprised how many bush tracks are on the tomtom. Iwas in the high country and they were there. I was at Mt Cole last weekend and they were there. For some reason the mapping guys arent as accurate in the country so you can appear to be driving 20 meters off the track. You can enter coords but in only one format so if the coords you have are different you'd have to convert them first.

Same as above. A more full on GPS unit might be more benifical for this purpose. but a tomtom may still assist if you are using the odometer method for these types of treks.

I have taken it to perth and used it there. Plug in the address and off you go. Its great.

The tomtom one (2nd gen) is pocket size.

Top answer Embi. Thanks heaps for that.

I'm thinking the Tom Tom will be perfect for just about everything I want to do. By the time I get keen enough to do some of our Oz Desert tracks I may need to add something more specialised - but that is the aim for 2011 when I get my next lot of Long Service Leave.

                            Hi embi

I have seen the unix based software (suntime) that changes the TomTom units based on the time, but I havent seen one for the Pocket PC based TomTom. Do you know of one for Pocket PC's? My unit is the HP hx5965
