  • OziExplorer for android phones

An alpha version of OziExplorer for android systems is available at

    http://www.oziexplorer3.com/android/ozi ... droid.html

I have loaded it on my HTC Legend along with a couple of maps and it works well.

Obviously early days without many of the frills we all love but a great start.

This really makes purchase of an andriod based tablet as a navigation/onroad web device so much more enticing. A cheaper alternative to the iPad.

        Re: OziExplorer for android phones

Hmm ...very interesting. Seems they are going to develop the app for Android first and then for iPhone.
I would have thought the iPhone market was much bigger.

The site says it can't do "position display" yet - does that means you don't get the little icon showing where you are ?
        Cheers, Wayne

You get a red arrow for your position and a line showing your track. The screen also has a #D button, North up/track up button and zoom buttons. Speed is also displayed. A second screen displays the GPS fix data.

It is an alpha version which means it is only for testing, but still works well.

              Re: OziExplorer for android phones

Agreed it would make more commercial sense to do an iPhone/iPad version first, but I'm guessing Android makes early development easy because they don't have to deal with Apple's approval hoop jumping. Apparently once the Android version is working it's relatively straightforward for them to re-code it for iPhone/iPad, so once the Android one is released the iPhone/iPad version won't be too far away. I, for one, am waiting impatiently as there is no comparable app available... I'm currently running Bit Map which has recently had an update apparently allowing ozi v3 maps which I'm excited about but haven't tested yet.

                Re: OziExplorer for android phones

Just got back from Bangkok this morning.
Bought back 7 inch Ipad copies running android 2.2 with 2 G memory expandable to 32G. WiFi and 3G for $110 ea. Got 5 of them to try out.
                8 inch were around $260.
Good to hear oziexplorer has a version for android.
Will download copy and test out.
                Thanks for info.

A new Beta version is now out with both a trial version and a version you can purchase. Is now just about useable.

I've been using the android version along side my WinCE GPS. Short story is I just don't like the android version. It is less functional and you do not have the capacity to adjust settings to user preference like cursor style, waypoints, routes, tracks etc etc. I think a good version for Android is still a long way off. Given also that android phones are app hungry I wonder what effect this will have on Ozi's ability to record tracks etc reliably. Is struggles sometimes with a normal GPS unit, and often on your android phone whilst you won't realise it, you may have 20+ background apps running. This has to have some kind of affect on performance.

It is still a beta version - that is a test version. The latest is an improvement, and the web site outlines what is planned. I think you will find that, given a bit more development, it will be as good as the windows version that we all love.

As for power, that purely depends on the memory of your phone or other Android device. They are growing in power all the time.

Now that the Beta is out, as per Des's published plan, he will start focusing on developing a version for the iPad. Wonder is that will be called the iOzi. Might mean no functionality changes to the Android version for a bit unless it's a serious issue.

There have been a number of updates so obviously Des is putting effort into developing Android version :-)
