Campo's 2008 GXL D4D build

Hi everyone,

just got a second hand 2008 GXL D4D with standard kit (even the tyres). Keen to emulate some of the awesome build-ups I've seen here on PP but don't know where to start. Happy to take suggestions and advice from other members who have gone through the same process so I don't make the same mistakes. What do I do first?

Thanks Trekrider, my rig is the same colour as yours! I noticed you got the Bridgestones. I was thinking of Coopers... Also saw the recovery points you put on - not a bad idea.

Mine didn't come with a hard cover for the spare wheel - is it really necessary?

I looked at Cooper, Yokohama, Pirelli and Bridgestone for mine and ended up with the D694s in Light Truck. I had a friend who had Coopers that didn't last but having said that I know lots swear by them. At the end of the day it's down to personal preference and I'm happy with mine.

Recovery points are a very good idea (some would say compulsory) if you are going off road but I had to remove mine when I fitted the ARB Bar - I see you have the Sovereign bar so I don't know how the recovery points fit on yours. The ARB Bar has 'tow points' fitted so I would use a bridle off both points if I had to be recovered - hasn't happened yet Plus I also have the winch if needed.

Mine came with the hard cover for the spare and I take it off when going off-road as my Hi-lift Jack mounts on the spare. Once again fitting one is down to personal preference but I believe they cost a bomb if you didn't get one with the car. If I didn't have one I certainly wouldn't buy one - I can think of lots of better things to spend my money on.

If you don't have recovery gear and a compressor these should also be very high on your list to buy.

Ha ha - I know! Ever since joining this forum I keep thinking "Shit - this is going to cost me a fair bit of coin lol!" Just reviewed the following tyre forum on Whirlpool:

Lots of people seem to recommend the LT D694's - I'm keen to keep road noise to a minimum as well due to previous experience with noisy tyres. Funny thing is though they were Bridgestones too (for the Commodore).

There are several tyre threads on here as well and yes, the D694 LT seems pretty popular. Mine had standard road tyres on the front and Grandcraps on the back when I got it and I didn't notice any real change in road noise when I fitted the D694s.

Hmm. I did tyres, Cooper ST in fact. then you will need to do a 2 inch lift to stop the rubbing. Re the lift, tell them your wishlist because if you don't you will be back getting the lift adjusted or redone after you add batteries, bash plates, roof racks, drawers, fride and slider, recovery gear that lives in the drawer, wifey, kids, dog, etc etc etc. ....... it n e v e r e n d s . . . . .

Tyres... yes well i put on Yokohama Geolanders. Pretty happy with them
So are you thinking Coopers, Birdgestone, Mickey Thompson, Yokohama, then throw in Maxxis...... OOOOHHHH my brain hurts for you
