That's when I came across the runva ones, usually in the context of 'you'd be better off buying a runva for that price'. Then I started looking into the runva ones and the warranty conditions were heaps better and no one could find a complaint (unusual enough in itself in the current age of whingeing about everything). That's when I saw the deal and decided to grab it. Hopefully I'll be another satisfied customer with no complaints.

Good winch Tiny, i got the 9500 runva winch and its got a larger motor then other 9500 winches and fast wound up, out performed various other winches last may at the Cape.

So I'm getting good at putting a winch on and off the bullbar. Installed and uninstalled 4 times today trying to find a spot that would work for the clutch lever. After the 4th attempt, I figured out where it needs to go but I'll have to find a way to space the winch back from the bar about a cm to give the lever room to move. Maybe a large nut as a collar or something will do it but ill have to give it another try next weekend. Ran out of time today.

Got the winch installed. Just need to mount the control box and hook it up. This weekend's job hopefully.

                Drawers/Kitchen finally finished (sort of)

Time for another update. My homemade drawers and kitchen are finally finished. I'm not going to win any carpentry awards but they are functional and fit my needs perfectly and after the blood sweat and tears that went into them, I'm pretty pleased with the result.

A bit of background, I looked at buying drawers but for the 150, most commercial ones expect you to take the rear seats out to fit the drawers. I didn't want to do that as I intended to use them for quick weekender trips and didn't want to do the whole seat removal and re-installation every time. I've made these to sit on top of the rear seats when folded down and between the cargo tie downs so I hold them in place with a ratchet strap over the top. I have a 60L arb fridge so I needed a big fridge hole and also wanted my kitchen needs to be built into it. Drifta was closest to what I wanted but I didn't like that their kitchen had to be removed to be used or that it was going to cost extra to get them custom made to sit on top of the seats instead of the usual way. This is what I came up with:

Bottom left is the fridge slide on heavy duty full extension runners from dirt devil industries on ebay. A bit of a bugger to completely remove but definitely solid enough to do the job. Top left is a big drawer for pantry. Heaps for a weekender but even pretty close to holding everything I need for me and dad for the 3 week simpson trip coming up. Top right is recovery gear. Easily fits snatch strap, first aid kit, tyre repair kit and a few tools with a fire extinguisher mounted to the outside. Bottom right is the kitchen box:

Opening out from the side, it's got a green washing up tub that slides on wooden runners up near the top. Under that is a gasmate butane burner with the snowpeak cookware pots and pans bundle on top (3 saucepans, colander, frying pan and kettle all fitting into a neat bundle, definitely worth a look on the drifta website) and still room to chuck a few other odds and ends in. On the right, there's another gasmate butane burner under the deep plates and cups drawer, then the plates and cups drawer and on top, a drawer with a knife and fork tray in the top and underneath that there's the chunkies like egg lifters and potato mashers etc. On the end is an extra plank of wood that serves as the work surface. Two angle brackets on one end dropping into some hammered out straight brackets attached to the box, two holes at the other end for a couple of adjustable tarp poles that have been cut down to fit. Not painted yet though. When not being used, it slides up beside the kitchen box on the right (you can just see it sticking out in the first photo). The two pole legs fit beside the fridge on the fridge slide.

I had to chop a few bits of corner out so it'd make the turn to get in and out of the door and the door wouldn't hit when it closed but it works well for me. I'm in the process of fitting an led to the door trim in the back door to light up the cooking surface.

I've also got a cheap small table that fits up the left hand side of the drawers that we can sit at to eat and the toilet ensuite tent and thunderbox fit up beside on the right. All in all, a lot of work but a rewarding experience when it's all done.

Oh and there's a bit of room in a slanted hidey hole up against the middle seats:

                        Also finished the winch install

I also finished the winch install. Got the Runva 11hp with dyneema rope and wireless and wired controllers, hook and pulley for $650. Decided I should give fitting it a go myself. Took a bit of work but I got there in the end. Basically, the trouble was finding a place for the clutch lever to fit so it could be turned. After 5 goes at fitting, rotating the gearbox and repeat, I eventually figured out that I needed to space the winch back from the bar a bit and have the lever facing directly forward. I got some longer high tensile bolts and spaced it with some m12 gal nuts as collars but it worked in the end.

Clutch lever through the top of the bar:

Winch control box mounted on the bar:

I got a bracket from ARB that fit the holes on the bar. Then I drilled some new holes in the little bracket that came with the control box to mount across ways on the ARB bracket and some new holes in the base plate of the control box to get it to fit, all done up with high tensile bolts, spring washers and threadlocker to make sure. Doesn't look the prettiest but does the job so far. I've been driving around with it for a week and nothing has come loose yet. I'll keep an eye on it to make sure nothing comes loose though.

I did a test to pre-tension the rope and from full extension to done up takes just over 3 minutes free rolling up a gentle slope. I expect it would probably be a bit different under load but I was pretty happy with it. Now I just need to test it out.

                            Ostrich Wing Awning installed

I posted this in the ostrich wing thread but wanted to put it in my build thread too but basically, I bought an ostrich wing awning for quick set up and pack away. It's imported from South Africa by a mob in Western Australia and they ship it across the country. Couldn't be happier with the service and they taylor fitting instructions to each individual's rack because it's so important to be mounted properly. The biggest issue is the cost. Not much change out of $1800 but if I use it every day on a cape york trip or at a GTG, often twice a day, it'll be worth it in the end.

For those who haven't heard of them before, it's basically similar to the foxwing rhino rack make but requires no poles.

Here's some pics of the mount and the finished product. It basically depends on the bracket at the back to give it the strength it needs so that it doesn't need poles:

It's attached to a piece of aluminium angle, 6mm 100x50mm, 2.2 metres long so that the awning has an extra mount point just past the end of my rack. It's only 1928mm.

There's 2 brackets that in theory are supposed to hold the entire load but I just bolted the angle between these and the rack/awning and seems strong enough to me. I'm not sure I'd have been comfortable without the angle:

The finished product seems great. I've no qualms about the strength of the awning although I am a little concerned how well the rhino rack clamps would hold up in a lot of wind. All in all, pretty happy with it so far though:

I'm not sure I'd leave it up without being nearby in case a gust sprang up but with the pole down, I'd be pretty happy. Considering how easy it is to put up and down though, I'll just pack it away whenever we're not using it. I'll give it a pretty good workout on the Cape trip in a few weeks so I'll see how it goes then. Certainly happy so far.

and here's a couple of pics showing the ribs that hold the awning and the strut that extends up in the centre to allow water to run off. I think I'd want it down in a huge storm but for anything light, it'd serve the needs well.

Just sayin not hating, but I wouldn't drive the Simmo with those wheels.
My stock rims are close to scrap after two Simmos. Don't under estimate how much damage your going to get crossing.
In particular mount dare to purine bore.
I would fit steel rims and save the nice shiny ones for the city.

                                Cheers
