  • I had a very fruitful modding day on Friday (8/11). Things ticked off the list were :-

    1) Roadsafe Recovery Points fitted – these are the newer design for the 150 that works with TJM bars without any overlapping of washers, etc. New 12.9 HT bolts used for all fixing points too.

    2) Tigerz11 Winch Solenoid Box fitted to the TJM bullbar and all wired up. Also re-connected the IPFs that we disconnected when we first tried to fit the winch. The solenoid box is tucked in next to the winch in the main channel section of the bar. Access to the controller plug is via the access hole in the front of the bar.

    Winch power isolator :-

    3) Ironman Underbody Protection plates fitted – No more smashed up factory tin foil under the engine LOL. I still have the old plates should I ever need to put them back.

Not a bad day’s work eh? Wish I could claim I did it all myself but no I had it done as I knew by the time me and Mr Fido got around to it there would be no warranty left on any of it LOL. OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration but our weekends tend to fill up with other things and time to work on the Prado is sorely lacking.

The recovery points and winch solenoid mounting were done at Smithie's Outback Gear in Cranbourne, Vic. Troy the new manager there was my contact at Roadsafe when all the point redesign stuff was going on. It took his fitter a few hours to do all the work by the time he pulled the grille apart, installed things, and tidied up cables, etc. I didn't have to pay anything for the points and their installation (my original ones were chopped during the re-design and Troy kept good on his promise to supply and fit the new ones once available). I did pay to get the winch box mounted though, that was a more fiddly job.

The bash plates I had done at Ironman’s Vic HQ in Dandenong South, the place is massive! Went there on my way back from Smithie's to have a look at them and they offered to install them while I waited. “Go for it” I said, “saves me coming back or struggling under the Prado on ramps”. Paul the sales guy even made me a cup of tea while I waited and gave me a showbag of goodies (Ironman stubby holder, sticker, and an Ironman branded bottle of water LOL). At $470 for the full set of plates and installation it's pretty good value.

So while it would have been very satisfying to do it all ourselves I decided for a couple of hundred dollars in fitting costs it’s all done in a day and a much neater job then I could have done.

Will post up some more/better pics when I get a chance.

      • Thanks Michael, it's a relief to have it all done. I just have to attach the hook to the winch and she's good to go.

Next item on the list is to swap my UHF over to the 80 channel Uniden. I haven't been too worried about that as my current Icom one does the job for now.

Forgot to mention that the winch controller location was chosen as it does not interfere with the front camera on the Kakadu. Yes it may be a bit more exposed to water where it is but I've covered every seam in Sikaflex so I'm confidant it will be relatively water tight.

        • Good to see you finally got the recovery points fitted. Been a bit of a saga, bet you're glad its all done.

I actually moved my Tigerz winch controller to the exact same spot today. Those Ironman bash plates look a little better than mine and they are much better than the factory ones.

          • Yes Dave I was very patient with those Roadsafe points, Troy left and I got missed in the process. Roadsafe were very good at sorting it for me though, they shipped a set of points over to Troy's new business and he offered to complete the job so I wasn't arguing. Travel distance was the same either way so I wasn't too put out.

There was plenty of dirt on the old ones LOL.

            • Hi Fido, Good to see you you hung in there and have finally had your recovery points all sorted.... it now means others wont have the same issues many (including myself) have had, well done.

Does the ironman underbody protection cover the electronic unit on the back of the transfer case? I've got Brains transfer case guard and am just wondering if the ironman underbody protection wouldn't fowl on the t/case guard I've got fitted already. That price seems pretty good I was looking at the TJM gear to match the mounting of the TJM Bullbar but as the ironman obviously fits to the TJM bar also I now have options. The ironman website says 2.5 / 3.0mm and the TJM is all 3.0mm

Was the winch isolator supplied with your winch or purchased separately I need to isolate mine also.

              • Hi Fabes, yes it took some time but I got there. The points are made in Roadsafe's factory in Taiwan so any changes take time, they also had to go through destruction testing once the prototype was made. I've noticed the old design ones are still floating around on eBay, etc so if you need the new design make sure you ask for the RPPRA150-H13 model.

The underbody plates don't cover or foul the TG150 guard.

Winch power isolator came with the winch but Tigerz11 sell them seperately I think.

ETA: Here's the link for the isolator - http://www.tigerz11.com.au/product-c...off-cable.html

Also forgot to add that the old design Roadsafe points will have a part no of RPPRA150-F12 or RPPRA150-D13 (not sure why the different part nos as they were the same shape) and fit fine with ARB bars as far as I know. I know you already have them Fabes, just adding the info for anyone else reading my build thread.

                  • I assume you're talking about Ironman 4x4 RanJ. Yes very impressed with the place and the two sales guys Paul and Leigh. I only went there to have a look at the plates and ended up leaving with a set fitted LOL.

                    • The ironman plates look good. How much does it weigh? Also how long is it?

                      • I don't know the weight sorry. As for length, it's 3 separate plates and they go to just in front of the transfer case bit where Brain's TG150 transfer case guard sits.

                        • Got the Clevis Hook installed on my Tigerz11 Grande winch today, it's huge!

Also found a long yellow sleeve that is supposed to go over the rope. I think it is to stop the rope from getting caught on sharp objects during recovery since it can be slid up or down the rope to cushion the rope. I couldn't get it over the loop at the hook end though so I'm guessing I'll have to unwind all the rope off the drum and put it on from the other end.

I had a play with both the wired and wireless remotes but find the wireless one is not as precise as the wired one. Since the wireless remote has 2 separate buttons for In and Out rotation rather than a toggle switch it's harder to get short bursts of winding or unwinding.

                          • Another option may be that sleeve/sock is to be used for the first layer when you spool the rope onto the drum to protect the rope - though as you indicated most likely to protect the rope from sharp edges in recovery situation.

The manual makes mention of a black sheath for that purpose but I haven't unwound all the rope yet to see if there is one. It makes no mention of what the yellow one is for but I've seen something like it used for protecting the rope from rocks in a recovery situation.

I found out today that the "-xnn" suffix (i.e. -H13) on the part no merely denotes the batch it came from. The model no for both the old and new design is the same, namely RPPRA150. There is old stock floating around so if you need the new design you might have to specify this or send them a photo.
