  • Re: Crammy's GXL D4D

Looks a little untidy but should be ok mate... As long as the lugs sit flush on each other and everything is nice and tight.

I thought of re-jigging the negative terminal clamp but I wanted to keep all the factory bits intact.

For those of you who are unsure what the pic is about, it's a pic is of the 35mm2 negative cable going to the winch connected on the body at the point where the body negative is attached. If you look closely you can see that the body negative is about 10mm2! So pulling the Prado out of a serious bog could have resulted in the car being burnt to the ground.

      Hi Crammy,
I'm referring to one of your older posts. Just for my education, am I correct in understanding that a burn out is possible because the 10mm2 body negative would not be able to handle the load? Also do you think that it would be suitable to attach the 35mm2 negative cable to the winch bar or cradle?
      Thanks.

        Hi Noel,

You're correct in saying that the 10mm2 cable wouldn't be able to handle the load of the winch. Most 9000lb-10000lb winches come standard with 25mm2 - 35mm2 cable to safely handle the load.

I'm not sure what sort of earth or -ve bonding the Prados have on their chassis, probably nothing better than the body earth. I'd be inclined to run your negative directly to the battery. Remember that the factory negative cables you see attached to the battery post are what the current will flow through when using the winch which has the negative attached to the body/chassis. It's not worth the risk to your car. The winch may run ok without a load on it but things will be different once you're stuck hard.

Most winches come complete with a negative cable long enough to reach the battery. Do yourself a favour and find a spot for it on the battery. Not always an easy task but you'll get it on there.

        Cheers,

        Crammy

PS: A perfect example of the stock wiring that you would be using as a return path if attached to chassis/body compared to the winch cable. Take note of the negative heading to the starter motor/alt compared to the 35mm2 winch cable.

Thanks for the advice Crammy. Last night I checked out the lenghth of my negative cable and it is certainly long enough. I also re-checked the battery terminal and the winch cable should fit on the existing terminal as there is nothing else attached as yet, other than what comes standard.

          Cheers

            BUMP!

I noticed Crammy's rig fell to the second page of the 'My Rig Build Up' threads and thought that it just wasn't right, considering how great this rig is and that new members might miss out on seeing it if it fell to the second page.

            Any updates Crammy?

Just curious also, your rig looks much better after lifting the front. You mention it is now raised to 790 at the front, just wondering what the back is sitting at? I couldn't find the measurement anywhere.

              Hey Madkore,

I've been petty busy for the last few months so I've been away from PP for a while.

There are a few new updates on the Prado since the last update.

              I've added:

              Brown Davis bash plate
              Firestone Airbags
 Tossed the rear ridepro springs and put in King Springs in (Sitting around 810-820mm from memory)

I'm pretty much finished with the Prado now so there won't be too many more additions. We've got a few things coming up next year so we may even have to sell it!

I'll be sure to keep the thread updated if there's any future news.

              Cheers,

              Crammy
