  • Chris's 120 1KZ

    Hi Guys,

Just bought my 2004 120 Prado GXL, with a 1KZ-TE in it. It's my first 4WD, but having been around family and mates with 4WD's I have some idea of the trouble my wallet is going to be in!! (and of course the awesome fun to be had in the near future).

I've already started putting some effort into it, so.. thought I'd share my build with people in the hope that they'd be inspired and start their own, just like I was.

Overall plan for the car is to get it capable and comfortable.. no muddies or 5" lifts! I'll be working with a basically stock vehicle, when I bought it, it had:
    - Sovereign bullbar
    - Narva spotties/driving lights
    - Rhino 3 bar roof bars
    - Tow kit
    - Knackered BFG 265/65/17's on alloy rims

This is the car as I bought it last week:

As far as condition goes, I reckon it was in pretty good nic for a 10 year old car. A few scratches (missing paint) here and there, a bump on the rear bumper and fuel tank bash plate, but otherwise no signs of damage or off road use. The car had clearly never been offroad other than some dirt roads.

    Already installed:
    - Tyres
    - Steel Rims
    - Snorkel
    - Head unit (genuine Toyo head unit from a later model - don't trust aftermarket ones)

    I've already bought:
    - Recovery points for the front
    - Breather point extension kit

    Wishlist:
    - Dual Battery setup (get new optima cranking battery, use current battery as AUX??)
    - Rear Drawers (will make these myself)
    - Roof racks (looking at making these myself, maybe an ARB steel setup)
    - RTT
    - Awning
    - UHF Radio
    - 3" Exhaust thru
    - Chip
    - Catch Can setup
    - 2" Lift
    - Replace current spotties with LED bar
    - Magnetized working light setup (as per craigm)
    - AJ120 rear bar and sliders

I'm going to have to set a pace to get the car up to scratch if I want to tag along on some of the trips my mates have planned this year, so.. lets get into it.

Got the new tyres and rims fitted today.

Ended up going with BFG AT/KOs in a 265/70/17, on Dynamic triangle pattern steel rims in black (the rims are 17x8, 6 stud and 30p offset). I bought 5, so the SWMBO is learning quick what this car really means...

Hopefully fitting the snorkel and other goodies this weekend..

        Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the link - That's pretty much what I'm thinking. Marine ply and carpet.. few latches etc.

Out of interest, how heavy are your set? Are they something you find you can lift in/out by yourself?

        Cheers!

            Hey Chris

I am in pretty muuch the same boat (ahh Prado?) as you - got our 03 120 Prado about 4 weeks ago and its pretty much more stnadard than yours - mods include towbar and roof racks - suffice to say I have a lot of work to do. Keeep an eye out for my build thread in the next week or so - once I have the first mods completed. I will taking some unique approaces to some of the mods that are planned.

                Busy weekend..

Installed the new head unit Sunday morning. Went in without a hitch, easy as!

The head unit is just a later Toyota model, with an AUX input. Picked it up for $50 on eBay. Really happy with the results - sounds great.

The console pulled out. Unfortunately SWMBO saw this and nearly died.

But was happy again when she saw this:

Sunday afternoon I finally got around to getting the snorkel on. This was a serious job, and by the end of it the $200 ARB were charging to install it looked pretty good!

But went on without a drama - a few broken plastic clips later (I now know why Toyotas don't come apart.. ever!!).

Marking out the cuts.. very carefully. In hindsight the $125 holesaw might have been worth it. We cut the hole about 5mm undersized and worked our way out to make sure of it.

The holes all cut, clench moments over. All fits up nicely, holes painted.

                  Installed and looking thirsty!!

Great job Chris. I don't think there is anyone drilling a hole that size into their pride and joy who doesn't freak. I bet even the ARB guys second check their measurements.

Hi again Chris, unless your a real big bloke I don't think lifting a set of drawers in and out is a job you would want to do by your self. They are large and awkward, it would be easy to break or scratch something.

I made my drawer system from alloy with a plywood top and covered it in marine ply. All up weight is around 30kg. Make sure you get good runners, thats the real difference between great drawers and cheap nasty ones.

Your Snorkel looks good, its good to get the satisfaction of doing things your self. Now you have $200 to spend on 4WD gear

                        Thanks Kevin!

I must admit it was stressful but looking at it that way (having the 200 to spare) is a really good point of view.

Cheers for the info re: weight. The only spin I was thinking of putting on my drawer system was some way to make them easier to remove/install by myself, confirmed now that you've said that. I've got some ideas, just drafting them up and will probably post soon.

And Madkore - cheers. I did have a few head scratch moments wondering how they get them in so cheap. I couldn't imagine doing that to someone elses car...

Had my first outing this weekend with some mates, playing around in the mud up at Lerderderg State Park.

The prado proved super capable, I'm chuffed. Even had to pull out a brand new 70 series GXL that got stuck in a bog hole, the prado just walked straight thru it!

                            Hey Chris,

They do ok the prados, wait till you get your lift, you will go almost anywhere.
What tracks did you end up finding? Those pics look a bit north of lerderderg in wombat, pretty muddy up there!
