  • HANSEN's 2015 GXL Buil

    Hi Everyone,

I thought I would start to put my build thread together for my new Prado especially seeing a lot of the mods I am doing have been made possible with the information I have been able to gather by reading this forum.

I will eventually catch up with all the additions I have made to the car when I get a chance to update it all.

    Cheers,

So I picked up my new 2015 GXL Prado Manual in early June after having to sell my much loved Hilux to make way for the new arrival to the family due later this year. The Prado was delivered with the following modifications:

    - ARB Deluxe Winch Bullbar
    - Ironman 12,000lb Synthetic Rope Winch
    - Tinted Windows
    - Headlight & Tinted Bonnet Protector
    - Toyota Rubber Floor Mats Throughout
    - Safari Snorkel
    - Toyota Towbar Kit

      MODIFICATION #1 - New Rims & Tyres

This Mod was the easiest as I had a set of Black Allied Rims in a 17"x8" +20 that I took of the Hilux when I sold it already fitted with some near new Mickey Thompson ATZ P3 265/70R17. Enjoying the look of the Black Rims on the white car and should look even better once the new roof rack and a few thing turn up.

As part of this wheel change I also removed the rear tyre cover and sealed up the holes in the rear door. I like the look of the Mag Wheel and Chunky tyre on the back.

While I was at it I took the Dremel out and trimmed the Rear View camera bracket ever so slightly to allow vision of the towball within the camera while reversing. Simple mod and makes reversing onto a trailer so much easier.

MODIFICATION #2 - Stereo Upgrade & Dash Cam

I had a set of Alpine R-Type 6"x9" Speakers and Alpine Amplifier left from my Hilux so I had these ready to go into the Prado straight away. I had the following installed by Sound In Motion on the Sunshine coast who did another excellent install.

        - Alpine X800-AU 8" Advanced Navi Station - This Required a replacement facia from Alpine which then had to be shaped further and repainted to fit the 8" model, worth the effort though.
        - Alpine R-Type 6"x9" Front Doors - Tweeter Removed from speaker and wired to factory location.
        - Alpine R-Type 6" Coaxial Rear Doors
        - Alpine 4 Channel Amplifier under Passenger seat
        - Blackvue Front & Rear GPS HD Dashcam Monitors - The video Quality on these things is awesome.

MODIFICATION #3 - Dual Battery, Rear Power Supply, Solar Panel & Roof Rack

I have grouped all these together as I tackled the install in 1 go. Below is a list of the gear I used for the install:

          - Tradesman Oval Alloy Platform Roof Rack 2000mm x 1200mm
          - Off Road Industries Dual Battery Tray
          - SSB 80 AH AGM Battery (Warranted for under bonnet installation)
          - Red Arc BCDC Smart Charger 25 Amp
          - 100W Low Profile Flexible Solar Panel
          - Projecta Dual Battery Monitor
          - Sidewinder Power Meters

I will post the photos to start with and if anyone any questions regarding the install please let me know and I will answer. The redarc was mounted on a custom bracket that utilised existing mounting locations under the bonnet of the GXL.

To Mount the panel I used a strip of Aluminium 20mmx3mm on top and bottom and bolted through to the strip below the roof rack. When placing the panel down I also put a small dab of silicon on the crosses in the roof rack mesh to stop any vibration from the wind. Seem to work a treat because it is quiet up there on the roof, done a few thousand k's with it up there so far and no dramas.
