  • Pat's Build Up

    Hi all!
I must first give a huge thanks to everyone who has posted their thoughts and ideas on this site. Without everone's hard work and honest input over the numerous pages I would not have had the confidence to do any of these mods. Most things included here you will have seen before, but hopefully some of you will get a few ideas for yourselves, maybe learn from my mistakes or just enjoy browsing over the pictures.

Basically I've been busy chopping, cutting, drinking, welding, sawing, screwing, drinking, gluing, twisting, breaking, bending, drinking, taping, hammering, painting, drilling and basically injuring myself, my bank account and the Prado over the last 12 months. Anyhoo, here's the result...

    2004 3.0 turbo diesel. Auto.
Bought it 2nd hand. Already had aluminium Soverign bull bar, tow pack, Rhino bars and old (and slippery) Cooper ATZ's.
I don't have a pic from day one, so here's my first stuck shot. Just put on IPF lights and GME uhf.

First job was to get decent tyres and a lift. Chose Cooper STT's and 40mm EFS suspension. Then windows tinted.
$360 per STT, $1200 for suspension, $360 for windows.

The obligatory nylon cutting board spacer for the 5th wheel.
    Free!!! :P

Safari snorkle and DIY car bra (or as I call it, the 'H2O Bro').
Snorkle $600 fitted, tarp and clips $20.
I'll have to mod the car bra so the straps around the mirrors don't take the full pressure from the water hitting the tarp.

(Note the neighbour's cat about to get backed over!!!!!!!!!)

GME TX3200 (i think). I put it in the centre console to keep the cabin tidy. Just a few rivits and then power from the cig lighter up front.
    $250 off ebay.

12,000 lb Raiden winch. Has anyone heard of 'Raiden?' I got it of ebay for $399. Import from China. I guess I'll just see what happens.
Had to get the winch cradle from Toyota ($230) and grind a little bit down so it'll fit. I'm still in the process of fitting the cradle onto the Prado.

Here's the solenoid box that comes with it.

I was sorta unimpressed with it so I fabricated a new one (pics to come later).

    Dual battery system.
Piranha battery tray, Supercheap solenoid, Bosch deep cycle battery.

Solenoid placed up high in the engine bay.

After running the wires through from the engine bay into the cabin, run them down the side skirting panels and through to the back right panel.

I drilled a couple of holes for the two 12V plugs.

The good 'ol $20 bash plate! I tapered the front so that the front is about 50mm wider than the back. Just cosmetic really. I also put a recovery hook on at the front drivers side. Two high tensile bolts were used but I'll remove this later and replace it with the Outback Ideas recovery point. The hook has worked well in the past but I'd prefer something that could be stronger.

A bug catcher on the front of the grille. This was on when I bought it. Works well, but I've taken it off in the past and it does leave a mark/stain on the chrome finish.

    Then came my biggest mod...
Rear drawers!!!! I went a bit overboard. Spent $550, but also took out 2nd row seats and made a shelf behind the driver and passenger seats.
A big thanks once again goes to all those who uploaded pics on this site. I've basically copied (quite badly in many places) many ideas and put in a few of my own. They're still in the product development stage, but I'm pretty much done. Still yet to do the drivers side hidey hole panel.

    Put in a central divider.

Not the greatest welds. With a bit luck they should hold!

Anchored to the floor using the turn-buckle idea. Also two brackets for the 12v camp light.

    Used bearings for drawer action.

Used the steel rod idea for side panel.

Just push down and it clips into place.

Then squeeze your fat digit into the hole, push the orange thingo underneath and it'll pop off again.

Then I made another little shelf for old times sakes!

It all works pretty well. No holes were drilled in the car at all. Even the cargo carrier (allbeit maybe illegal) was modified to fit without drilling. $101 off ebay.

That might do me for the time being, as I've got the ARB tradesman roof rack coming this week. Need to fork out $1150 for it!

    Cheers guys and girls.

Great job there pat, do you take orders? Looks like you do a better job than some of the accessory shops

I would probably replace the occy straps (as they stretch and stretch and stretch and then just break) on your water bra with straps simiar to your mirror ones and I would probably get someting between the shackle (tie to mirror) and the paintwork (to save your paintwork).

Great job thou, now you need to get it dirty.
"Ooops I just deleted the internet, lucky I was able to recover 99.7% of it out of the bin"

          Re: Pat's Build Up

Got the ARB steel Tradesman roofrack fitted recently. $1150 fitted.
2100mm wide. Open at both the front and the back. Very handy. Was a little bit worried about how it would look being open at the front and the back, but I'm happy with it. No noise at all and well suited for straps.

            Re: Pat's Build Up

I've finally hooked the winch up!
Let me tell you it was quite a job.
First I took the solenoids out of the original plastic box and made a new one out of steel. This took almost a whole weekend. From the previous pics you can see how flimsy it was.
Then I grinded the Toyota winch cradle to fit the winch. Only 2 spots need to be grinded down about 4mm (the D shackle was used as an anchor point for the hand winch to attach to when lifting it into place).

A little word of advice... check where ALL the electrical connections are before fitting the winch and the cradle to the vehicle. I went through the process of putting the whole winch onto the vehicle (which took almost 3 hrs) only to realise that I couldn't access the earth plug to the winch motor. I had to pull it all off and start again!
This is a pic of the winch off the cradle with the 'hard-to-get-to' cables already connected. The Sov bar is partially disconnected. The lights are still connected.

Then connect the winch to the cradle and then you will either need something to or someone to help you haul the winch and cradle up into the gap between the Sov bar and the chassis. The winch weighs approx 45kg and the cradle would have to be about 40kg too!
This pic shows where the cradle (dark black) sits between the chassis and the disconnected Sov bull bar.

Just line it all up, screw in the bolts and remember to put in the extra shims supplied with the winch cradle. If you don't then the Sov bull bar won't line up with the rest of the vehicle and it will rub on the wheel arch and other panels. If you look closely you will see in the following pic that the Sov bar is touching the painted panels of the vehicle. There should be a 2mm gap to allow for vibration. I'll insert the remaining shims when I get the time. Hopefully before the paintwork gets rubbed off!

            Here's the finished product:

I'll include pics of the solenoid box position later.

              Re: Pat's Build Up

Got myself one of those DTronic units too . Easy to install, took only 30 mins.
With 85kg of winch, roofracks, dual batteries, increased height of suspension, big Cooper STT's and rear drawers, I think the 3.0 diesel is now performing like I remember when I first bought it 12 months ago before all the mods .

                    Re: Pat's Build Up

Got the 3 inch exhaust installed 2 weeks ago... very nice!
After much comparing and contrasting, rather than going with a 'brand name' exhaust I got the local exhaust guy to fabricate one up instead. He had a lot of knowledge and experience so I was confident of a good result.
Basically we decided upon a 3" stainless steel mandrel bent exhaust which runs straight through to the last section of original ehaust. We kept the last section original as the exhaust gas temperature shoud be considerably less at that point, requiring less space to expand anyway. Also he said it would take a fair bit of effort to get a 3" tube through that section. This saved me a few $.
The filter (pseudo cat converter) and the convoluted muffler was eliminated. This was replaced with a single 'straight-through' muffler.
Its too early to say if I've got better fuel economy, but the deeper exhaust note, incredible turbo 'whizz' and an increase in performance have made it all worthwhile.
                    Cost: $950 fitted.
                    Stoked! :P
